Ok Ok hindsight time, why weren't they asked to play? was it simply because they weren't asked or did Jeff refuse because he thought that the band were 'out of touch', so why? I think Jeff has always underplayed the bands reputation (check out Hyde Park 2014) But the gig they played a year later at Wembley dispelled all that. I think that if they played at Philly, they would have have gone down a storm...

Weren't Jeff contemplating ending ELO by 1985? And then came Balance of Power in 1986 and then it was finito. So my guess is he wasn't really fighting to push ELO out there.

I wonder if they were asked though, anyone could see that a gig of this size would have been important to do.

I simply believe they weren’t asked. Surely we would have heard something about it if they had turned it down. A shame though they didn’t play on either, such massive shows.

The last time E.L.O. had toured was in 1982 (Time tour). Moreover, in 1985 Jeff Lynne was busy writing, recording and mixing (and re-mixing) new songs for BOP. He spent many weeks in Germany (Untertrubach) and Nassau (Bahamas), although I don`t know exactly when (Maybe Shard Ender knows the exact facts?). I guess JL wasn`t asked and if Bob Geldof had asked him he would probably have turned it down due to his reluctance of playing live anyway, even if had had the time to do it.

I know Jeff was getting a bit fed up with the band and he had plans lined up but if Bob had asked him to play then I think he would have said yes and gone out on a relative high. He would have known less than a year later how popular the band were still, with Heartbeat and Wembley.

You just can’t imagine that anybody would turn down a chance to be a part of this. Jeff could not have had a better chance to promote ELO again and if he had one eye on BOP, which I believe was to be released in 1985, how better to promote it. Calling America would have been a much bigger hit here and the USA. I think ELO would have had Wembley bouncing with this set list. Not easy to pick four had a few variations.......
Song 1 All over the world Song 2 Don’t bring me down Song 3 Mr Blue Sky Song 4 Calling America (If it had been released in 85)

Another potential thread, 'Live Aid set list'! I think he would have played safe and gone for 1. Evil Woman 2. Mr Blue Sky 3. Don't Bring Me Down 4. Roll Over Beethoven
The reason why I don't think CA would have been played is because artists played their most well known hits. Adam Ant tried out his new stuff and he was pilloried for doing so.

Agreed, I put it in because of the US connection with live aid, as you say he would go with the bangers. ELO fans could easily pick four songs, but it’s not an ELO concert so he would have had to play the songs that the majority would have known.

That`s not how it works. And considering that Jeff hated playing live I guess he would have definitely turned it down. I mean, you cannot go on stage without rehearsing a few days seriously when a band like Queen is performing on the same day. You don`t want to make a fool of yourself. (Some acts that didn`t rehearse regretted it bitterly afterwards and tried to erase their performances form their history.) Besides, Jeff didn`t even have a band in 1985, really, apart from Rich and Bev.

Maybe if Jeff had been asked to do Live Aid he'd have turned it down because it was just too attention-drawing, especially at this point in his career. Had there been a Live Aid in about 1978 I'm sure he'd have been there though.
I've come up with my Live Aid ELO 17 minute set-list with a little inspiration from Queen's set-list -
1. Mr Blue Sky (first bit only) - Got to start off with your classic song 2. Rock ‘n’ Roll is King - A popular current single 3. Secret Messages - Another recent song, it may not be well-known but it's current and fans like it 4. All Over the World - Not too old and something you can sing along to 5. 10538 Overture / Roll Over Beethoven medley - Ending on a solid note with a classic and a traditional concert finale

Also, WHEN would they have played? I reckon early evening around 7ish just after Simple Minds and leading up to Bowie.

It was planned to have been released early 1985 so it would have tied in nicely for July 1985. ShardEnder may know the exact date. It’s hypothetical anyway I don’t think ELO were ever mentioned. Wish Jeff still had Richard and Bev.

I can't seen ELO in darkness nor starting the show.
ELO could have been taken Queen's spot.

The initial sessions in Nassau began in September '84 and lasted six weeks, with mixing finished by early '85 - BOP was originally scheduled for release around that time, but ended up being delayed quite significantly (possibly as a result of Jeff's father dying later in the year). There are pictures of a band rehearsal from February '85, so my guess is that everyone was ready to play live, and that the group's absence from Live Aid was the result of ELO either not being invited or the organisers preferring more relevant acts. At this point, weren't fans and journalists alike in writing ELO off as a spent force, even though Jeff was still under contract to deliver one final album?
