I'll be 60 soon. Unlike most ELO anniversaries, I will actually do something!

Hugh McDowell would have been 68 yesterday, born July 31st, 1953, died November 6th, 2018.

This is turning into a major damp squib. I would have expected that if there was to be a major re-issue campaign we would have heard by now - online sites and record shops would have the information on their forthcoming releases, someone would have been teasing artwork or test pressings like they did for the 7” singles box. Look at the background chatter in the run up to “From out of Nowhere”, we more-or-less had a tracklist months in advance. Apart from some dubious tee-shirts and posters, there has been nothing so far.
I am not interested in rumours heard from other forums or wish lists, but is there definitely anything coming out this year that is music related?

Quite a few sites have a 50th anniversary campaign listed that will release over two waves later this year, the first of these covering the 1990-2019 period, and the second spanning 1973-1986, but not including the first two albums. Presentation boxes will also be available, with designed based around the artwork for Zoom and Out Of The Blue, while each individual title is going to feature what has been described as a 50th anniversary band. Considering these are exclusive to the BSCD2 format, which hasn't ever been adopted outside of Japan, it's likely this is just some variation on the obi strip. As for whether Sony is going to issue a domestic equivalent, they're unlikely to let such a milestone pass without celebration, but it looks as if Jeff's social media team is doing what it can to maintain interest until next year. The remake of 10538 Overture was promoted as a 40th anniversary version, and since that's the only track revisited from before Showdown, my guess is that a line is being drawn to mark July 2022 as when Roy left as the beginning of what is now regarded as Jeff Lynne's ELO. (Bev may have been a legal co-owner of the ELO name until late 1999, but he's no longer in a position to challenge this narrative, which is already being hinted at in merch designs.)
P.S. The serial numbers of these upcoming releases indicate they are just paper sleeve reissues of the most recent remasters, right down to the same bonus content with few exceptions, where such things exist. Armchair Theatre repeats the original tracklist as opposed to the expanded 2013 version, while Zoom is reverted to the first Japanese edition, meaning we'll finally have the correct stereo mix of Long Black Road back in print. For some reason, when this appeared on the American Hustle soundtrack, it was wrongly mastered to mono, though I guess that technically makes it one for collectors, even if that was due to a mistake. Oh, and no Long Beach, Xanadu or further live recordings outside of ELO Live from 2013 and Wembley Or Bust. In terms of "compilations," you get 2012's Mr. Blue Sky and that's it.

So from a UK perspective, the short answer is “No”.

Again, there is absolutely no way Sony is going to allow ELO's 50th anniversary to pass without some kind of celebratory release, but it's clear plans for a more elaborate career-spanning set evolved into the BSCD2 reissues, with anything else likely pushed back into mid-2022 for some reason. Jeff's merch store recently introduced new designs inspired by artwork used during the Time Tour, but also referencing All Over The World for some reason. Is that their way of hinting at announcements still to come?

So do Sony have the final say on any reissues?

Sony looks to be in full charge of the upcoming BSCD2 paper sleeve "mini-LP" reissues, but since these don't offer anything new (beyond revised artwork in a few cases) when compared to previously released versions, they wouldn't really need to seek Jeff's approval. These were likely pushed forward in the absence of anything else being intended for the Japanese market, and if Jeff felt they competed with his own plans, they would be simple enough to block.

Some tiny, idealistic part of my brain keeps trying to reject the notion of ulterior motives and hoping that we're just waiting for the 50th anniversary of No Answer's US release in March 1972 since Jeff is stationed stateside these days... I wish I'd been wiser and gone in with zero expectations so I could've been pleasantly surprised if anything did materialize... I think I've become numb to the disappointment at this point, it's come full-circle and I will be pleasantly surprised if we get some sort of release at all.

Maybe Jeff is taking his cue from what the Olympics and Euros have done, doing things a year after they should have been done. Look out for Time coming out in 2022.....

I'm with you there - the downside of social media and daily forum chatter... In the old days of course no-one paid much attention to anniversaries until the marketing people decided to take advantage of one. Now we have calendar-watchers teasing releases many of which have never been planned and in some cases don't even exist! 😆
