queenofthehours< We panic buy loo roll, America panic buys guns. I don't know what to say about that. > Most Americans don't. But some are afraid that an angry mob will turn up to steal their last roll of toilet paper. Yes, we panic buy that too.

Things have gone downhill at the speed of light here. It appears that tomorrow the government will decree mandatory quarantine for everyone, ala Italy, for a week. My sister is expecting and she's already within the previewed period for the birth of her child, she could be born as soon as today, although the estimated date is March 28th. Honestly, I am concerned. This is a terrible context for having a child, many things could become a difficulty, like hospitals running out of beds or of course my sister getting infected. For the time being mild to hot weather is holding and it will for the next week, which helps a bit, but after that a cold front could come at any moment. Hoping it will turn out fine for your sister and baby. Horrible situation to live through.

Have you all seen the footage of Italian people singing, on their balconies, to encourage each other?
"And someone's singing from a window"... Jeff's vision of the future, spot on.

I hope your sister has a nice easy birth and is able to leave hospital quickly so the family can help her at home, or even that she is able to have a home birth which might be less stressful all round. Best wishes for the new arrival

Thanks BSJ, queenofthehours, eloneen, Horacewimp, unomusette and all who sent me good wishes about my sister's situation. I'm happy to announce that in the middle of this chaos (and now since 30 minutes ago it's complete, utter, unbelievable chaos... I'll further comment about this later) my niece Margarita was born! Just 20 minutes ago. It was soon and unexpected, but I think it was better because right now they were able to provide her all the care she needs, and maybe in a week they wouldn't have been. I couldn't be any happier and relieved.

The reason this is complete chaos is that the government has just announced 2 (!!!) weeks of mandatory quarantine, with strict sanctions to anyone who violates it, effective as of hour 24 today.
This means that the next 4 hours will be the last chance that people have of buying things for the next 2 weeks. As you would expect, there was a stampede of people to the streets, long lines everywhere, complete chaos. In my opinion the way they did it was a mistake by the government.
