I thought viruses couldn't be killed with a vaccine? Vaccines are used for prevention of a variety of illnesses. Many of the common vaccines used today are given to prevent viral illnesses such as polio, measles, and various strains of influenza. You may be thinking of antibiotics, which only have the capacity to kill bacteria, and not viruses. Yes, that's what I was talking about, thanks! Not exactly a biological scientist, myself...

I'd still like to know how it originated though, this hasn't been well documented and personally I feel we are not being given the full facts... What are your suspicions, Timeblue? Speak your mind out.

The common theory is that it's the fault of the Chinese, either bio warfare or a virus passed from animal to human but that to me doesn't sound plausible. If its bio warfare, why would the Chinese release something that would cripple their industry? and the animals to human theory is just wrong, surely anything like that wouldn't lie dormant then fly around the globe in just 4 months? What do I know though....

I'm not an expert either, of course, but I do believe the animal to human theory, coming from the Chinese wet markets, which is the official explanation. Other dangerous viruses have jumped from animal to human, but they were transmitted through less efficient means (Zika through mosquito bites, AIDS through blood and sexual transmission, for example) than respiratory droplets, and they took longer to take hold. The bio-warfare theory is not really credible in my opinion.
When I raise the question about whether the government is telling the public the truth, I'm not referring to conspiracy theories, but woeful ineptitude and mismanagement, and misguided optimism. We are hearing contradictory and blatantly untrue statements from high places in the US about how our government is/ is attempting to address the situation, and what we can expect. There is constant cleanup after the fact of mis-statements during the freestyle but nonetheless official messaging lately.

Yeah, I agree with eloneen: I believe the animal-to-human theory too, and I simply don't believe the bio warfare theory. Of course, my opinion is of little value here because it's more intuition than anything else, as I don't understand the science related to this. eloneen, other than respecting the legal side of it (so as to avoid sanctions) and being cooperative if needed, I wouldn't pay that much attention or expect salvation from the government. Not even them are sure as to what to do in a situation like this, as prove the different approaches that different countries have towards the virus. Timeblue: you said that you don't believe much in those two theories. Do you have a theory that you believe in? Just being curious.

Fortunately, most state and local officials are dealing with this crisis in a credible and appropriate manner, given the limitations of what they are able to control and access. They are some of the real heroes in this situation right now, in my opinion. The confusion and deficits are mostly at the national level.

It all started in China.
Why? Search for "Chinese Wet Markets". You won't believe your eyes. *Warning Disgusting Graphic Content*
P.S. A really interesting book everyone should read.

I also don't hold any stock in the bio warfare theory, and I am frankly upset that some people are using this virus as an excuse for prejudice against anyone of Asian descent. (This statement is absolutely not directed at anyone here, just a general statement about things I have heard other people in my daily life, and even certain news organizations, say). I agree that the animal to human transmission theory is much more likely, as other diseases have been passed along to humans by similar means in the past. However, I am no expert either! That just seems to be the most plausible theory we have at the moment. I also agree with eloneen that this situation is being handled far better by our individual state governments than it is by the federal government. Thank goodness for that, because I can't say that I trust much of anything that comes from the top of the current administration. On a lighter note, because of the current state of things, this song has entered the Billboard top 100 chart again for the first time in over 30 years. It has even surpassed its original chart position (no. 69) at no. 64. I guess the line "it's time I had some time alone" is particularly resonating with people as well.

BIuebird, we had to help move my daughter out of her college apartment yesterday that REM song was blasting from one of the rooms when we pulled into the parking lot radio stations and Sirius were playing "pandemic playlists" sad and surreal right now hopefully the social distancing techniques work I read about a restaurant owner in Washington DC who says he refuses to comply with the mayor's orders (tables six feet apart), bars closed. The mayor responded with a comment about using the police department to force compliance. I'm not sure that will be necessary if the bars and restaurants are mostly empty anyway. the 20 somethings will probably be having Covid parties (like the hurricane parties that happen as a storm approaches)

Are they trying to collect their inheritance from Grandma a little early? Then there are the ill-informed folks (many of whom are beyond the young and foolish age) in some areas of the country who are not taking the virus seriously, but are out buying more guns and ammo...No fool like an old fool. Boggles the mind... True patriotism there, right?

There's a lot of talk about fear, social distancing, isolation etc. these days and times are scary but we all have each other. If we stick together on this forum and give each other help and support when it's needed we can make it through these hard times. Keep calm and listen to ELO!

Doesn't hurt to laugh during times like this, right? I loved this PSA from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Jeff's album Alone in the Universe may be sadly fitting for a period of self quarantine. But personally, I'd rather listen to the bouncy, greatest hits if that happens.

word of the year may be "caremongering" < But in Canada, a country whose inhabitants are stereotyped in the media as kind to a fault, helping others has become an organised movement called "caremongering". > www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51915723
