I love the melodies and the many layers of sound that Jeff puts on top of them, but what puts his songs on another level is the emotional range that he can bring to a record. Music for a manic depressive? I consider myself kind of an ultra logical type. If presented with one of those silly questions like - which Star Trek character are you? - I'd pick Spock.
But when I listen to New World Record, I'm transported to my teenage years, so my profile represents me "when I was a boy"
Last weekend I attended my oldest child's college graduation - and Poor Boy from Eldorado came on singing "my head is high from the battle won".
This weekend, I've just returned from a visit with my dying father. Listening to Armchair Theatre and hearing how much Jeff was moved by the death of his mother. September Song - "When days dwindle down to a precious few
; September, November; And these few golden days I'd share with you". Listening to "Lift me up - finish what you started"; I'm thinking of it in terms of a funeral.
too morbid? well this has been the craziest roller coaster of a week that I've ever had
my father called for help; asked me to fly down to Florida to break him out of the hospital
the hospital Doc lecturing us on what a terrible decision we were making
"he could die on the ride home! can you live with that?"
yes Doctor, but I couldn't live with myself if I left him to die alone in an out of town hospital, away from his wife, children, friends & neighbors
he's dying, his regular doc has already advised hospice
and he and I both want to make the most of these last days
so we signed the paperwork and took the risk
5 days so far and he's holding on with decent days interrupted by rough leukemic night sweats
his pastor visited, my sisters flying in to take turns with the nursing
it's 100 times more meaningful than if he was spending his last days hooked to IVs in an out of town hospital
and Jeff's music is helping me deal with it
