It was 30 years ago today, Jeff didn't teach the band to play, as they were already among the most accomplished musicians of their day. May 8th 1988 began two weeks of recording for the first Wilburys album and although I hated it at the time I eventually grew to love it. I hated it before Id even heard it. I hated it because to me at that time it was taking the Jeff I knew and loved away, it was taking my ELO away. Of course I know now none of that was true. If it wasn't for this period of Jeff's career I don't think Id now love George, Tom, Roy and their music so much. Happy 30th to the greatest super group of them all... Attachment Deleted

Bought it when it was released. I could not believe it when I read who was in the group. A fav I still listen to. AND, the added treat of their video's!

First I knew about it was hearing Handle with Care on the radio and thinking "I'm sure I just heard Jeff Lynne singing" Then when the song finished and the DJ explained the whole Wilbury thing, I could at first hardly believe it and was extremely chuffed swiftly after

The first I heard of the Wilbury's, they did a piece on one of the networks, NBC I think. They called them the new supergroup with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and others. I thought immediately "and others" meant Jeff because of his friendship with George and his continuing desire to produce different people. Needless to say they took a great moment and ruined it for me.

My first introduction to the Wilbury's was a poster advertising Handle With Care. This one... Each one instantly recognisable. The Travelling Wilbury's? What on Earth??? Loved it! It's great that Jeff includes HWC in his gigs nowadays. Thank you sundown for reminding us of this important date - and event

Traveling Wilburys volume I is an amazing album, vastly underrated and largely ignored by the masses. You can hear it from start to end and there's not a bad song in it (well, "Like a ship", if we include the bonus tracks, but even "Maxine" is brilliant) in my opinion.

Honestly, all the guys were great and brought their own unique talents to the group but there would never have been a Wilbury's without Jeff Lynne.

Jim Keltner just played drums, he didn't write. Sure it was a luxury having him, but it could have been anyone else. I don't think he was referring to him as well.
He must have said it because "there was another guy, I've got no idea who he is, but if I say 'another guy' it will be too apparent that I'm ignorant, so let's be more generic and say 'and others'".

That whole time period just seems like it had to be so much for fun for all involved. Hanging out on some beautiful Spring days in LA, writing songs with your buddies, with no pressure to have a hit single, and just having the artistic freedom to do whatever you want. The fun they had making the record definitely shines through in the songs.

I'm writing a creative non-fiction book about the making of the Wilburys album, except it's set in an alternative universe and the group members have superpowers beyond their usual ones. It would have been cool if I could have published it around the 30th anniversary of the recording dates, but maybe in time for the 30th anniversary of the release, on October 18.
My editors say it's a pretty funny read.

If it wasn't for the Wilburys I wouldn't have fallen for Jeff. It's as simple as that. I can't believe its 30 years ago, it seems so recent.
