Tom Petty Dies Aged 66

Tom is one of the voices of my childhood. I don't think the world will be the same if he dies.

His daughter tore into Rolling Stone for announcing his death, prematurely. Can't say I blame her.

The family and management of Tom Petty has confirmed his death via Facebook.

On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty.
He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived.
He died peacefully at 8:40PM PST surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends.

Poor Tom... 66 is too young for him to be gone. A good guy and a great talent.
Sorry to say this but I find myself thinking of more than a few other people I would have liked to take his place.

I've been thinking the same thing, elophile, why couldn't it have been somebody else? I've never been a TP fan but he was a member of the Wilburys, a friend of Jeff's and for some reason, this has torn me up. I thought he'd be the last of the Wilburys to go. So unexpected! He was only 66 for crying out loud! Waaaay too young. My favorite video of his is 'Don't come Around here no More'. Love the tea party at the end.

I didn't really know much about Tom and his music until earlier this year, when I went to see the Wilburys tribute act. Intrigued by the songs, I bought Warren Zanes' biography of Tom, "Petty", and read it a few months ago. A fascinating read.  

Goodbye, Tom, and thank you for the inspiration you gave to others. Too right, 66 is MUCH too young to leave us.

Let's treasure our heroes while we can.

RIP Tom. I'm still struggling to come to terms with this awful news.

The man was an integral part of the Jeff Lynne Story over the past 30 years and it leaves such a gap now that he's gone. I only saw them in concert once (Into The Great Wide Open Tour of 1992) and he was quite some musician.

Given that so many famous acquaintances of Petty came out to express their thoughts about him and his passing away, it would be nice to see Jeff, who was probably closer to Tom than many of the guys listed above, do so as well. Hopefully he will soon.
