I've just spent hours searching the forum, 'cause I had a vague memory of this question being raised before.... but it turns out that was years ago on the ELOFANS site!
Anyhoo, I recently ran across a site - The US Public Records Index - in which you can find very basic info on just about anyone in 'Merica.
On that site, it names him as Jeffrey L Lynne - it's him without doubt, as it names him as head of "Big Trilby" etc. (Incidentally, Sandy's middle initial is 'L', too).
The site does not say what the L stands for; I rather gather that money is required to find out any more than that...and in any case they probably wouldn't tell a bleedin' Aussie.
Perhaps one of our 'Merican friends can find out? |

I vaguely remember reading something back in the old Usenet newsgroups days -like 1996 or so- that his middle name was Lawrence.

Not everyone has a middle name, as far as I'm aware both Jeff Lynne & Roy Wood don't have middle names. There was a publicity hoax in the mid-1960's that Roy Wood's birth name was Ulysses Adrian Wood, this has since been proved to be untrue, his name is simply Roy Wood.
As for Jeff L Lynne, that could have been a typing error, just like his G. Lynn credit on the Idle Race "Imposter's of Life's Magazine" single.
Both Roy and Jeff are protective of their private lives outside their musical career's, let's respect their privacy and not delve too deeply into the private lives of Mr Wood and Mr Lynne.
Just enjoy their music and be happy that they've chosen to share their talent with us all.

This is the truth! I don't know how Jeff has done it! When I first got really into ELO one of my first impulses was find out everything I could about this strange hairy man - Jeff Lynne - but google as I might there really is barely anything to be found... aside from what is in Sharon Osborn's book I've only really found statistics and what Jeff himself has chosen to reveal. Laura Lynne's recent anecdote was the biggest crack in the facade so far I think. I think it's normal to be curious but I have to say that not knowing much about Jeff's personal life is probably for the best. I'm sure he's wonderful but he IS human. The rock star biographies I've read have all left me disliking their subjects to one degree or another - Marc Bolan, Syd Barrett and David Bowie all lost some of their mystique for me after learning too much about them. |

My grandpa is Jeff's age, and was never given a middle name. He finally got so annoyed by people asking him his middle name or initial, he just made one up. haha.

Apparently it's quite hard to see them with the naked eye, you need to be looking through a camera or other type of lens?
