drove down to DC on Thursday night to see a great blues-jam-rock band, Big Head Todd & the Monsters special bonus, they had Hazel Miller with them, she adds a powerful soul voice to many of their songs
I won these tickets on the radio, but that meant general admission - standing in the back. Not a problem at The Hamilton. It's one of the best music venues anywhere. Capacity of 600 in 3 tiers of seating / standing. About 5 blocks from the Capital One Centre where I saw Jeff last Summer. 5 blocks in a different direction gets you to the White House.
Todd is a fantastic guitarist and extends the solos in some amazing jams with his band. If you're not familiar, here are a couple of samples:

Last week the Mrs. and I went to a club in Vancouver to catch a band called Platinum Blonde - a band that most Canadians should remember from their glory days in the mid 80s. They had an album called Alien Shores which was an absolute smash in Canada, but they never could break big in the US and that was their downfall. As a note, the great Alex Lifeson from Rush contributed a couple guitar solos to that album... Platinum Blonde was the very first rock concert I ever attended as a teen in the 80s in a hockey rink in Prince George British Columbia. It was an interesting experience to catch them again so many years later. They are playing as a 3 piece with 2 original members, and they still cut a youthful appearance on stage. It was a fun night out with all the hits I remembered and a few newer selections that fit in well with the set. Well worth the money!

I have booked to see Peter Frampton at the Royal Albert Hall in May. It is part of his farewell tour as he has been diagnosed with a degenerative muscle wasting illness. "Frampton comes Alive" is one of my all time favourite albums, and I couldn't miss a chance to see him one last time. Peter Frampton has cancelled his forthcoming tour of Europe due to this damned virus. It's understandable of course, but still very disappointing, as I'm not sure he intends to re-schedule. Unless things radically change, I can forsee the same thing happening to Jeff's tour.

The Doobie Brothers 50th anniversary tour is being postponed. I'm not surprised, of course. Our June 2020 tickets are now good for a July 2021 concert at the same venue. I hope Michael McDonald will still be on tour with them. Now let's see what happens with my Hall and Oates concert in August...

music is coming back through virtual gigs - has anyone watched or listened in to one that delivered a real concert experience? tonight my local radio station put together a virtual festival with musicians playing 3 or 4 songs each from around the country The Airborne Toxic Event, Fantastic Negrito, Margaret Glaspy, Hollis Brown, Allen Stone ... and more it seems like musicians are so hungry for a chance to perform that the station had no trouble getting artists to sign up I don't know what they get paid. And there isn't any merch table. But they put forth a good effort anyway. one bonus - everyone could bring their own alcohol instead of paying inflated prices at the park

we went out to dinner for the last night of our Virginia vacation in the mountains outdoor dining, 12 feet between tables, touchless ordering and payment - the whole Covid thing but then some musicians came in after a private function and proceeded to treat us to an impromptu concert quite a good string duet

This seems to be a good idea, everyone safely distanced and no pushing and shoving. Not perfect but at least it enables you to watch a concert in relative safety. The kids will hate it as the 'moshpit' will not be allowed but I think it works...

just got back from seeing Starbelly do a free show NE of Baltimore. Got to talk a bit with Cliff Hillis afterwards - very nice guy. He says the Orchestra is making plans for new shows. Lou Jr will step into a larger role with some of his Dad's keyboard work in addition to cello pieces.
I think tonight was the first time that Starbelly had done their Ballad of Baltimore song live. But they were tighter on that song than probably any other - probably means they focused their rehearsal time on the song they were most worried about.

I'm going to a double feature tonight. Orioles vs Yankees (which probably won't go well) followed by The Avett Brothers who will cheer me up. At least that's the plan - no rain allowed.
