Once I had a Brit give me a hard time because I used the American spelling "jeweler" instead of "jeweller." I was describing one of my hobbies as an amateur jeweler, and he said if I was one, I should know how to spell it. I told him that where I live, that is the correct spelling. He didn't have much to say after that. lol We Americans just made the spelling easier by removing unnecessary letters.

Then again, I just found out the other day that “moustache” is the British spelling, and Americans are supposed to spell it “mustache”... lol

Confusing? You don't know the half of it! For me, it's bad enough hearing British people (and Mercans, too) pronouncing Irish words and names completely wrong. In the dim and distant past there was a mini-series called 'The Thorn Birds'. In it was a ranch or farm called Drogheda (after the town of the same name in County Louth). You cannot imagine how awful it was hearing it pronounced as Drogeeda! It's pronounced Dro-heada - with the first syllable sounding like the "o" in "on". There are many other cases of irritating mis-pronounciation. As for spelling... Some people want to pronounce or every vowel or consonant in a word. Even when some are silent. Is it Ahmond, or Al-mond? I'm too fussy

I'm not going anywhere near the Irish pronunciations! I'm guilty of say Drogeeda I must admit, but if it's a silent'g' then gaol for instance must be 'hail' rather than the 'j' sound.... confused isn't the word

In the good ole days there wasn't an "h" in the Irish language. In the modern language it's there to soften the sound of the letter in front of it. In old Irish this was a achieved by a dot being placed over that letter. Typewriters couldn't handle that, so things had to change.
This is the Lord's Prayer (or The Our Father, as we call it in Ireland) in old Irish script...
Compare this with modern Irish...
Ár nAthair atá ar neamh, go naofar d’ainm, go dtaga do ríocht, go ndéantar do thoil ar an talamh mar a dhéantar ar neamh. Ár n-arán laethúil tabhair dúinn inniu agus maith dúinn ár bhfiacha mar amhaithimidne dár bhféichiúna féin agus ná lig sinn i gcathú, ach sar sinn ó olc.
That's much clearer now, isn't it

Not strictly a graphic, but it's short and made me hoot
