It's maybe to do with expectations. Personally I was expecting the whole album to mostly reflect his recent work but ended up enjoying the quite varied and retro feel to a lot of it. Maybe he genuinely thought that was what the old guard of fans wanted?
Even if he'd wanted to produce unusual and challenging songs he'd probably have come under pressure from management to resist that and appeal to the masses, who expect his signature "guilty pleasure" type output, rather than hardcore fans who know he's capable of branching out.

Rubbish. It's a great album. And I speak as someone who had reservations beforehand. For me it's Jeff's best work for 34 years. Opinions eh?!?!

LoserGoneWild: ok, I respect you thinking that. Why do you finish your messages with "opinions eh?"?

I love the album, and I think Jeff was brilliant in not trying to live up to his past. He has repeatedly stated that he was just making an album, and he did it very well to my ears. He wisely resisted trying to make Out Of The New World Music. And by doing that he managed a very rare feat.....a very good album 40 years after his so called "peak". The dinosaurs who keep trying to remake their past nearly all failed miserably. Jeff is a very wise man.

If infinite monkeys type every day, they might accidentally write Hamlet a play! LOL. Sorry, couldn't resist. Hhmmm... by that you mean what exactly? It was a silly reference to the theme for Infinite Monkey cage written by Eric Idle and performed by him and Jeff. If all of us sat and wrote songs every day one may be lucky enough to do one as good as Jeff Lynne. To produce and perform and record it as well would be a monumental task and I seriously doubt it could be done by anyone here. The album is brilliant and at 67 Jeff still has plenty in the tank.
