Another live performance - the classic lineup... The exploding cello vide probably belongs in this thread

Wow, this is great! So much to like about this! It sounds great! No lip syncing! Bev is out front! Thanks so much!

One of my least favourite 'hits' but still a faultless performance.

As with previous clips from this TV appearance, it seems as if they were either playing to a tape or possibly overdubbed at least a few vocal bits later, as all three visible singers back away from their microphones at 3:05 despite Jeff audibly continuing on for one final ad-lib. In the past, I'd considered the possibility similar parts were provided by an off-stage assistant (most likely the band's front of house mixing engineer), but this makes it clear Jeff was augmenting himself somehow. Similarly, the Fusion performance has the band playing to a subtle rhythm track that can't be accounted for, which I suspect was a way of keeping them in time with the timing of the MXR phaser being applied to Jeff's Ovation 12-string acoustic. Having footage in this kind of quality is a goldmine for someone who loves studying these kind of production details, and I really hope it won't be long until we get uploads from the group's last visit in February 1977.

It would be great if Jeff would have sat down in an interview and discussed this period of ELO history, particularly the production side of playing for tv broadcasts. These broadcasts were important to get the ELO name out there beyond the tours and other PR. But this sort of stuff is not on the approved menu of topics, sadly. As a result, we are left with assumptions and best guesses - not from the horse's mouth, so to speak. And definitely no offense to ShardEnder - I'd just like to see Jeff speak more expansively about those ELO years beyond the short comments in the reissues and his focusing on a specific set of topics, most of which don't pertain to ELO.

Just wish The Midnight Special would have included Natalie Cole's intro from June 25, 1976, before this very same video, "And I love them, please welcome the Electric Light Orchestra"

I've always liked this song and this is probably the best live version I've heard. Kelly really had a great voice when given the opportunity too.
It's also apparent and easy to appreciate why Jeff was so frustrated by live performance as (what sound clearly to me) as those vocal overdubs on the strings were needed or you would barely have been able to hear anything at all.

Nice, no tapes except for the spoken word part of "Eldorado Overture"!
