He was the only rock star ELO ever had. The coolest cello player EVER! He is the reason why the cello is my favorite instrument. Sure wish I could've seen him play.

That song is one of my two favs off Eldorado (the other being Laredo Tornado). That band was smoking that night! All of them should have been inducted into the Rock n Roll HOF. One hell of a string section! And to think that Hugh and Mel were fired by letters in the mail. I was two years too young to see The Big Night Tour, but I know that the ELO string section you see here inspired several musical friends to pick up the violin and cello.
The Flashback compilation has a photo of Jeff holding a cello. I'm sorry, Jeff - but you are no Hugh or Mel.
RIP Hugh

Hugh McDowell also sadly passed away 5 years ago this year, on November 6th, 2018, at the very young age of only 65 years old! "This is Casey Kasem in Hollywood on American Top 40, you know, it's become rather common over the past 15 or 20 years at rock concerts to see guitarists tossing their instruments around the stage, but this next group in the countdown features a man who throws a 20 pound, $2000 cello into the air, catching it, just before it hits the ground, it's all part of the act, the cello toss is performed by Hugh McDowell, he's a former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and currently 1/7th of The Electric Light Orchestra, a couple of years ago, the stunt backfired on him, the group was appearing in Houston, Texas and right in the middle of their last number, Hugh went into his cello hoisting routine, throwing the big instrument high into the air, but this time, he got so carried away by the response of the crowd, he forgot to catch the cello on its way down, and it crashed onto the stage in about a dozen pieces, well the audience loved it, and they thought it was part of the act, but Hugh wasn't so sure what to do, finally he, just picked up the pieces of his shattered cello, and tossed them into the crowd as souvenirs, we got the story from the group's drummer Bev Bevan who tells us that Hugh McDowell, is still tossing his cello around during their concerts believe it or not, but nowadays, he travels with a spare cello backstage, this week, their latest hit is at #17, The Electric Light Orchestra with Livin' Thing" - Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from January 22nd, 1977

I heard a story, a long time ago, about Hugh. It might've come from Bev Bevan's book. It was something about the band checking into their hotel room while Hugh proceeded to try to chew a fake plant in half. Something like that. Later, somebody showed up at ELO's hotel room and wanted to know "who ate the plant". Did you know that he had a pet snake? I think I read that somewhere too. It never would have worked between him and me though. I hate snakes!
