I envy you, Horace! The fact that you get together with 5 other people and out of them 4 (plus you) like ELO is a very rare case. But, of course, being from Birmingham or nearby place the likelihood to find people who are keen on ELO must increase considerably. As for me, I'm quite alone in this world. My mother, who lived through those times, knows most of the songs from "Discovery" (which is the only ELO album that hit quite hard in Argentina), but doesn't even know any song out of that album, not even "Mr. Blue Sky". Then, my 10 year old cousin for some reason knew they existed and asked me if I liked them. And then there's the rocker guys with whom I get together to jam; many of them are in their 40s and 50s and remember ELO from those times, and in general they say it was a great band. Other than those few, I can't recall any friend or relative of mine being aware of the sheer existence of ELO, although I must say that my friends are surprisingly ignorant when it comes to music or are more into Argentine folklore. Of course, everyone else knows "Last Train to London", but I don't think anyone would know who is the author if asked. So that's it, but as they say, geniuses are often uncomprehended, my friends. I don't have too many friends or acuqauintances that are avid music fans like I am. One guy I worked with said he was really into smoking dope to Eldorado back in the day it was out, so was able to make conversation about that once in a while. As for growing up my older siblings had "New World Record", "Out of the Blue", and "Discovery" kicking around the house, so my older siblings are at least familiar with those and appreciate the songs from the heyday era of ELO. But if I was ever to bring up about "Time" or "Secret Messages", they wouldn't have a clue or any desire to check them out. I do have a thing going with one of my brothers where we give each other a CD of ten songs that we like and think the other might like. I put "Heaven Only Knows (Alternate Mix)" on the last one and he liked it, and the next CD I give him will have "Calling America", probably. I put a plug for "Time" on my facebook one time, and got like one Like on it, that was it. So, basically not really any huge ELO fans for my circles, though of course everybody indeed knows and appreciates the hits and "Mr. Blue Sky", etc. Jim

Last week, I got talking to a colleague about ELO. He said the only song of theirs he knew was Four Little Diamonds.
I must have done a good job selling them, because he promptly went off and downloaded the Secret Messages album.
Saw him today and he said how much he liked it. I've recommended A New World Record to him next.
He'll be joining us on here before he's very much older!

Got my best mate hooked in the summer of '89. I grew beside a council estate in Dublin and house/acid music and Metal were all the rage. I can still remember walking across a huge concrete square to my buddies house and hearing him scratch off Judas Priest on vinyl and the warping sound of the play button on his cassette player banging out "Mr. Blue Sky from the OOTB tape I had made from him! The speakers were hanging out the windows (ah the 70's and 80's) and all the kids in their metal tee shirts and denims playing footy just fookin stood there going WTF?!!!! It was class! I laughed my ass off! The lads were like "what and who the f**k is that"? After playing Ma Ma belle and Do Ya....all returned peaceful. ..Daddys sunning themselves in the front porches...."AHHH IS THAT ELO"? YEAHHHHH! t'was great....ah happy dayz....happy dayzzzz...

When my mom still enjoyed music, she used to like the Traveling Wilburys, too. She rarely listens to any music these days, though. And she does not like the sound of Jeff's voice. In her youth, she enjoyed the first two albums of the Rolling Stones the most. My dad likes a good hook in a song so when I play him some ELO and Lynne productions, he usually digs it. Julianna Raye's "Limbo" and Del Shannon's "Rock On" album are particular favorites with him. And my ex-girlfriend, well, she told me she didn't understand nor like the "old men" I listened to, but that took place when we had grown apart already.
