OK, here is my review of "The Best of Icicle Works", aka the thoughts I had while playing it, etc.
1. "Hollow Horse (Long Version)" - Good singer, good lyrics, nice harmonies on the chorus. I like the chorus.
2. "Love Is A Wonderful Colour" - Spirited chorus, but kind of run of the mill 80s pretty boy band stuff.
3. "Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)" - Thought it was really lame when it started; by the time it was finished I liked it a lot; very cool tune!
4. "Understanding Jane (92 Version)" - Another pretty good one.
5. "S--- Creek" - Cool beginning, etc.
6. "High Time (Acoustic)" - Works, good one.
7. "Who Do You Want For Your Love?"- Good vocals, nice sincere song. Like the wedding video.
8. "Evangeline" - Cool keyboard intro, good tune.
9. "Little Girl Lost" - Nice arrangement, seems like their more sparse arrangements work the best.
10. "When It All Comes Down (92 Version)" - Nice chorus, OK song.
11. "Starry Blue Eyed Wonder" - Like the simple arrangement; pretty good one, a lot of feel to it.
12. "Out Of Season" - Nice music, atrocious lyrics.
13. "Kiss Off" - Well, Nancy, guess this one kinda sucks.
14. "Up Here In The North Of England" - OK tune, nothing special.
15. "Firepower" - Spirited track, doesn't do a lot for me.
16. "Blind" - Reminds me of Mott the Hoople style, nice lots of soul.
Overall good solid band, enjoyed it. Seemed like 2 or 3 different lead vocalists. They need to decide if they want to go all out rock or all out 80s, and they need one good solid vocalist, one with more rock leanings. Lyrics not the deepest, but at least passionate.
Star rating: 3.5 out of 5
Prime cuts: "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)", "Who Do You Want for Your Love?", "Starry Blue-eyed Wonder"
Bottom line: A pretty good CD to keep on, kinda brings you into it and like it more each time. Looking forward to playing it again.
So that's my review of it. Thanks for posting it, Timeblue!!!
