From the perspective of an Irishman living in England, I'm not bothered one way or the other whether England wins tonight - or not.
However...
I think that it'll be very important for England to do well. From what I've seen so far, this young team has been the 'cleanest'. I don't mean that they're using the best detergent to keep their white shirts spotless.
No... from them, there haven't been any histrionics or simulation. Sr Neymar could learn a thing or two from them.
A lot of people are watching this football tournament. A lot of young people too. These football players need to realise this - and behave properly.
So, for that reason, I'm saying "C'MON BELGIUM"
I, erm, drew THEM in the office sweepstake.
I know my priorities!

Do you remember Ray Bradbury? Add the Netherlands to that list. Sweden eliminated them too, in the qualifiers.

I agree, Neymar is a disgrace to the game. Hope karma pays him a visit during the next game.

in my experience Wales/Scotland/Ireland....there is a large element of ABE (Anyone But England)...largely fuelled by jealousy and the one-eyed media coverage but it is complicated by club loyalties! says the man who supported iceland because of the cardiff player

Well Done England...although I am not looking forward to the next 24 hours...the media will be wetting themselves. CD's and podcasts are the only way to get through the next 24 hours

England! With what suffering!
I switched my allegiance to England during the game because (talking about disgraces to the game) the Colombians were as dirty as I've ever seen a team play in a WC. They came out to fight, protest, head punch, fake, foul, dive, protest more and keep on protesting. If they had come out to play I think they would have had a better chance, but they were too focused on being dirty. And they were stupid too, because they got away with one penalty, they got away with two, and they kept on fouling in the box until the referee had no choice but to call a penalty. Overy aggressive and too low IQ. I'm glad they are out.
The big winner here is Sweden, they won today on the 90 minutes and will be facing an opponent who has played 120 and penalties.

We are talking about football here... How do you feel when your rivals win. They are our nearest neighbours and we are the perpetual underdogs. I have many friends who are English I am glad for them. I have many friends who are Welsh I understand what they are going through 😕

I feel no shame at all in saying I want Brazil to lose against anyone and I feel glad when they do. It's football rivalry after all, it's not like you are wishing their country catches fire and burns down. Unfortunately, Brazil losing is looking quite unlikely right now...

The 'anyone but England' sentiment runs through many aspects of life - even the hallowed grounds of Rugby.
Going slightly off at a tangent, as a lad I'd noticed Irish actors being referred to as 'English-speaking' by some across the Irish Sea, rather than admit that they were Irish. It would've been easy to think that we weren't important. Any 'anti-English' feeling might have been understandable. I have to say, I didn't meet that attitude when I came to live here.
The most significant sporting event in my lifetime - yes, I mean that! - was England playing Ireland in the Six Nations - in Croke Park. For the team to be there was something. God Save The Queen was sung out with pride - and fully respected by all present. I was so moved by that. After all the years of hurt, suspicion and mis-trust, this 'foreign' anthem was heard in the most obvious non-English venue. Times and attitudes had changed. And, about time.
Getting 'back to the story' - Expectation on this current England team was limited. "Not this World Cup - but, the next..." It's a tremendous achievement for them to gotten to the quarter final. Anything more will be a big bonus. They have the potential. Let's see what happens.

For some light relief, here's a jolly song about football Aah! I haven't seen that in 20 years . Is it wrong that I still remember all the lyrics? I loved Adam and Joe.
I didn't see the match last night 50% because if I did I'd jinx it and 50% because I couldn't stand that much emotion in this weather. But I'm glad we won on penalties because Gareth Southgate deserves the redemption that's taken 22 years, if we go home on Saturday we'd still have achieved something good.
I remember the summer Gareth missed that penalty - the moment was like getting hit by a truck. I remember writing in my diary many pages about the whole sorry match. Who'd have thought that 22 years later the chap that I just wanted to hug because he looked so sad and disappointed would be an England manager WINNING on penalties? Someone should write a book or make a movie!

And, to make things worse, only 2 years later in the next big tournament, Batty and Ince missed their penalties against a certain team and you were out on PKs again... In your previous post, when you said "Gaz" missed the penalty in the Euro '96, where you referring to Southgate or Gascoigne? I seem to remember Gascoigne missed a penalty in that shootout too, and Gascoigne was called "Gazza", and maybe "Gaz" is an abbreviation; or maybe they call Southgate "Gaz"?
