So, it's going to be 14 F overnight--very cold for our neck of the woods (I'm sure BSJ is not impressed), and the young man is not interested in going to First Night, the big celebration we usually attend on New Year's Eve. He says that it's "boring" to do that again this year... My baby is growing up!! We'll probably go to a movie this afternoon, then home for dinner and then to the Watch Night service later on, depending on how Mom is feeling tonight. If not Watch Night, we'll stay home and watch the fireworks and ball drop in NYC on TV, do our little champagne toast with hugs and kisses, and call it a night. There are also lots of folks who like to shoot guns at midnight to celebrate New Year's, too, so that's something else besides the drunk drivers to look out for... So apart from watching out for drunk drivers, you also have to avoid falling bullets? Yes, sadly, we have to be careful. A few years ago, one family in our old neighborhood had a bullet that damaged their house. I think it actually went through a wall...Go ahead, say it ... "Crazy 'Mercans!"

Plans are still evolving over here. Mom is feeling a little tired and out of sorts today, so we will most likely stay at home to keep an eye on her and not go out, except for Hubby, who has to work. Up until the big countdown tonight, we'll have plenty to do around here. The young man and I will catch up on laundry, and I'll finish grading papers and writing thank you notes to students who were nice enough to give me gifts- especially those who were smart enough to give me chocolate!! They have definitely been paying attention to their teacher, the sweet little angels! Meanwhile, we're making the best of the situation. It was still below freezing here as of noon. I've cranked up the fireplace, and I'm making a big pot of beef stew. I've got some chicken and rice soup going in the slow cooker. I'm also preparing some Brussels sprouts with the leftover ham and ham bone from the other day (YUM!!) Southern tradition calls for eating leafy greens and black eye peas for New Year's Day to ensure prosperity and good luck in the coming year. Our family always had cabbage when we were growing up. Here in NC, lots of folks have collard greens. I'm counting the Brussels sprouts as our leafy greens! I don't have any black eye peas, and may not venture out for them until tomorrow. (Truth be told, I don't really care much for them, either!) Stop by the Shoutbox today for some soup or stew! There's plenty! Don't touch the Brussels sprouts, though!

Deal breaker not being able to have any Brussels sprouts! Hubby's off to work and grandma doesn't want any. Quick, grab the rest while no one else is looking. Not a word of this to the rest of the gang, OK?

OMG !!The Brussels sprouts were so good!! Hubby went out and bought some black eye peas this morning, and I cooked them for my family and ate just a little. Everyone else had some, too. So, having followed the tradition, Chez Eloneen should be a prosperous and lucky household in 2018!! We shall see!!

We have very flexible hours, but it's a private club-- invitation only. (Chez ______ means "at the home of ________" as well as "__________'s place" which can be a home or place of business, which is why some restaurants use it in their name.)

Thank you! Very nice. Is there a card that get's punched? You know - after the 30th plate full, the 31st is free? Funny, we had some last night at a friends home! Baked in bacon....... *droooooool*

BSJ That is definitely a delicious way to prepare them. I bake mine in bacon for Thanksgiving, and I've got all the kids on Hubby's side of the family hooked on them now!! I'm the "kid whisperer" in the family when it comes to veggies. My dear, there is no punch card. We are a fine establishment and do not rely on such common promotions! Our quality speaks for itself! *Wondering if I said that with just the right snooty intonation.*
