You could tell from an early age that Mik was destined for a musical career.

British band Prefab Sprout have admitted that part of their 1988 hit "The King Of Rock 'N' Roll" was inspired by early ELO.
Fans suspect it was the chorus, which goes: "Hot dog, jumping frog, Albuquerque..."
The argument still goes on as to which other two ELO members proved so inspirational.

A reference to an exciting Northern instrumental I simply can't help dancing to. Come to think of it, Mr de Albuquerque was in Violinski too...

When ELO were at the height of their fame, a certain British seaside town announced that its local waxworks museum would be adding models of the band to their collection of famous figures. Amused by this idea, the band made a secret visit to the museum to check out their wax lookalikes. Jeff was quite pleased with his waxwork, but was less impressed when the management told him that, to make him and Bev, they'd had to melt down Laurel and Hardy. Visitors kept pinching "Jeff"'s aviator sunglasses, so the curators had a habit of replacing them with some of Elton John's. Hugh liked his model, but was not best pleased to learn that its stage outfit had previously been worn by "Mama" Cass Elliot. Shy Mik was relieved that the creators had put his cape on the wrong way round, so it covered his face. Melvyn's waxwork was falling to pieces, except for his arm, which remained proudly in the spotlight. "Never out of action," commented his colleagues. Kelly was shocked to find that his waxwork had accidentally been moved to the Chamber Of Horrors, but with his usual good humour, laughed it off: "I was stood right next to Sharon," he quipped. Richard's waxwork was so lifelike, the band threatened to borrow him for the next album cover, if ever Mr Tandy got stroppy again and refused to look into the camera. The management revealed that the exhibition had caused total chaos when one visitor had yelled to his friend: "Hey, I just saw them move!" It turned out, he'd actually said "I just saw The Move..." but not before a crowd of screaming customers had fled from the building. Lastly, the band were amused at the choice of ELO song played in the display room - what else but Livin' Thing. In the Chamber Of Horrors. Now, don't have nightmares.

When A New World Record was released, ELO's management came up with a promotional stunt inspired by one of the tracks. None of the band members were willing to take part, but Mel turned up late to the meeting and was given the job, despite his protests. The rest of the band sniggered ... but, on the day, Mel acquitted himself very well, impressing everyone with his skills, and brandishing a copy of the album as he did so. He claimed that his secret was using his arms to achieve the Balance of Power, and avoid The Fall. (Even when a police car went past and nearly distracted him from his Mission.) In all, another win for the legendary Melvyn Gale Arm.

Jeff's new space ship was made on mars. They're still trying to work out what tariff payments would need to be made in order for it to be able to land in the states.
