I don't think we can expect to find a meaning in every Jeff lyric from the 70's. Especially in the background vocal parts. Maybe the "two-step in the hall" just sounded nice when Jeff wanted something for the backing vocalists to sing. It rhymes with "wall" and works with the "dancing" in a tongue-in-cheek way. So there's no "meaning" necessarily, I think.

Ok - at the risk of seeming obsessed, I'd like to offer some more:
The dying embers of the night A FIRE THAT SLOWLY FADES TILL DAWN still glow upon the wall so bright BURNING BURNING BURNING The tired streets that hide away FROM HERE TO EVERYWHERE THEY GO roll past my door into the day IN MY BLUE WORLD
The dancing shadows on the wall THE TWO-STEP IN THE HALL are all I see since you've been gone TURNING TURNING TURNING Through all I sit here and I wait I TURN TO STONE I TURN TO STONE You will return again some day TO MY BLUE WORLD
A) I agree JL's lyrics are not 'profound' - they are not attempting to guide 'the chosen' to a brighter world (or whateva!). B) That does not mean JL is not capable of some depth of poetic feeling; I suspect that these lyrics were not 'dashed off in the back of a taxi' . C) Which leads me to a greater appreciation of his prose.... best illustrated by reproducing it without the poetry:
A bloke is sitting at home moping because his love has left him. He is aware of the various paths/streets/choices available to him if he accepts the situation, but - He's sad, he sits in front of the fire, watching the flickering flames and dark shadows in his front room until dawn. Depression descends on him as he waits for her in futility.
I feel for him.

Ok - at the risk of seeming obsessed You're concerned about seeming obsessed? On here!? have you met the rest of us? "I wouldn't seem so obsessed if others were more focussed" "I wouldn't be so paranoid if everyone wasn't against me" "I wouldn't look so fat if you guys weren't so thin" "Sure I'm crazy....but am I crazy enough?"
Yeah it crossed my mind that mentioning 'obsession' was slightly absurd on a fan forum... and this one in particular!
But thanks for noticing.
