I have seen several sources (Face The Music fanclub and Wikipedia) cite that Surrender charted in the UK singles chart in September 2006 at #81. I've tried on several occasions to corroborate this and I've come to the conclusion that it's simply not true.
The Official UK Singles Chart is now online and searchable. I've look at the Top 100 charts for a few weeks before September 2006 to mid-October 2006. I've searched under "Electric Light Orchestra", "ELO", "Jeff Lynne" and even "Jeff Lynne's ELO" and I find nothing.
My guess is that either the #81 position was from some other chart other than the Singles Chart or it didn't chart at all and the Face The Music fanclub is delusional. Does anyone know?

Wasn't Surrender released as a download single from iTunes?
If so maybe the chart position was for the iTunes download chart rather than the main UK Single Chart?

Yes, I have to agree. I think the idea of Surrender charting at #81 on the Official UK Singles Chart was just a fevered dream of someone and it's been propagated as truth.
I agree, though, that it may have charted on some other chart at that position, but not the Top 100 Singles Chart. I'll be removing it from my ELO UK Singles page as a charted single.
Also seems kind of peculiar that When I Was A Boy didn't make the Top 100. Seems to me it was quite well received in the UK when it was released and it had quite a push behind it, but obviously it was not strong enough to make the Top 100 at all. The music industry has changed drastically.
