Festival crowds are usually pretty much just there for the event itself, and tend to be lackluster in most cases.

I agree.
'Sweet Talkin' Woman' on BBC2 now. I'm glad I'm not at the festival - I'd probably try and invade the stage.

Don't they know that Jeff's charisma is that he DOESN'T force his personality? That's he IS humble and quiet? He lets the music do the talking and I wish a hell of a lot more performers did so as well.

The set was fabulous, Jeff was in fine voice especially in WWH and the crowd never thinned despite the rain. It is a bit of a shame he doesn't engage the audience more, there were some very quiet spots between songs where I'd usually expect to hear at least some background hum from the crowd. This makes me wonder if they were muted in the TV coverage hence making them sound more subdued than they actually were. It wouldn't hurt to let some of the band step up and do some chats, I'm sure they'd be up for it and it would help things flow along better for the average non-rabid spectator. From my point of view I don't care a bit whether the frontman talks to the crowd or not as long as the music is good. Just because they write brilliant songs doesn't make them extrovert or charismatic, if it doesn't come naturally they shouldn't force it. Plus I've seen a few bands on more than one date where you realise the between song banter is carefully rehearsed and is the same every night. Muse are often criticised in exactly the same way but their sets are so blimmin' loud and apocalyptic your ears are mostly ringing between tracks anyway and you're just trying to get your breath back for the next mosh. A pop-oriented set like Jeff's is going to show it up more. But I adore them both regardless, can't people just be satisfied with musical greatness? As a footnote I must say that Adele is a total natural at drawing in the crowd as well as having a formidable talent. She's just genuinely chummy and down to earth. I'm not a massive fan of her style of music but I found myself enjoying her set last night having just put it on in the background, because she was so obviously enjoying herself and sharing it all as if she was your mate from down the pub

I think the TV coverage cut a few of the in-between-song interludes. I'm sure Jeff spoke more on the live radio than he did on the recorded TV coverage.

What a great concert! And what an even greater ending! This is the highest ROB has ever been in my estimation. I’ve never been a fan but Donovan’s drums, Tandy’s piano part and Jeff’s wonderful example of proper guitar playing has won me over. It was fantastic how everyone got a moment to shine here. And Jeff shone brightest – by doing as little as possible, too. Which is how the TRUE stars shine . The entire concert was superb. A little more Richard would have been appreciated though! Did no one tell the camera people that he had been there since the start of ELO? Today the band looked as fresh and vital as always. Especially Jeff who looked better than ever; his vocals were better than ever as well. He’s improving as he ages!
‘WWH’ and ‘Telephone Line’ have fast become favourites for me. I never was a great fan before but the new emotional intensity that seeing them live has given them makes them very special. Even more so because Jeff’s vocals are so much sweeter these days.
I wonder if unomusette saw the start of the BBC2 coverage as I'm sure I saw Muse singing the praises of ELO.

Jeff on radio 2 spoke of 8 new tracks in progress I read into that new album September 17, new tour... He also said not looking to produce just into his own music, it's as though he's starting afresh . He has 2000 cassettes of ideas, oh to be amongst that lot!hes like prince 😉 Now this is what we wanted to hear. Now, for goodness sake Jeff, get the telephone directory and give Bev a call and complete the circle.
