Not getting off to a good start. Fans facing long delays getting there and the place is already turning into a mudfest. Let's hope it brightens up by Sunday and Mr Blue Sky isn't played with irony and Jeff goes out with a bang. (I wonder if he isn't hurriedly rehearsing Summer and Lighting just in case? ) *
*As it stands the weather forecast looks pretty good for the rest of the festival with only a few showers predicted, and most importantly, sunny for Sunday -Ive got a feeling MBS will be the highlight of the set.

I've no idea who else is playing. This will be the first Glastonbury I've paid attention to in years. The last time I watched the festival John Peel was presenting. I'd have loved to see Peel interviewing Jeff!

IMHO Early 70's he would have been bang on the money for the alternate lovers.

I'd have loved to see Peel interviewing Jeff! Much as I admired John Peel I really don't think that ELO would have been his cup of tea. In fact he probably couldn't stand them! Peel's featured on the sleeve of the Idle Race's first album and he appeared to have been quite a fan of the band and of ELO's early work at least.
He gave ELO a lot of positive reviews during the early years. Of 'Roll Over Beethoven' he said that the version "thundered along magnificently" and that he "should haven't doubted Jeff Lynne's ability to come up with something remarkable".
In a review of 'Showdown' Peel said "Who has Jeff Lynne been listening to now? On the first coupla [sic] hearings, I didn't rate Showdown too highly but stick with it, brethen, it's a grower. The production and the arrangement are excellent, very black sounding, and Jeff Lynne has obviously been listening to someone pretty good. Shimmering strings tap the ball off the centre-spot and are most admirably deployed throughout, not dominating but adding emphasis and punctuation to the side, Jeff even contrives to sing black and the whitest things about Showdown are a crisp guitar break and a group of ladies who go 'raining, raining' in spots. The beat, as we reviewing johnnies are so fond of saying, doesn't let up for a moment. The Pig was put in mind of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, and I dare say she's right. Even if it doesn't do too well in this country it should lay them on their ears in the Americas. 9/10 to Jeff and the Boys." [The Pig, incidentally, was an affectionate nickname for Mrs Peel]
Even if John wasn't as big a fan of their later stuff, at least ELO had one supporter in their difficult early days.

Fair enough - I can see how early ELO would appeal to him and am glad he gave them some encouragement.

Saw a BBC clip, interviewer asking 4 fans who they are here to see. ELO and Muse were answers. Mid twenties are the ages.
Also. What a mud pit.
