Really looking forward to seeing Roger at the Albert Hall next week. I've seen him several times over the last few years and he always seems such a genuine man and performer and a truly great songwriter. It won't quite be up there with ELO last week, but after them, Supertramp come a very close second as my favourite band. Hodgson is a very different songwriter to JL as his songs seem to come from a much more personal and self-revealing place and the passion and feeling in his voice is amazing and I always much preferred his music to Rick Davies' more cynical bluesy side of Supertramp. And (sadly) if the fall-out between Jeff and Bev was bad the ill feeling between Hodgson and Davies was and still is, incredibly bitter and resentful!

I hope you have a great time, look forward to your review Thanks. I could probably write the review now. He never does anyrhing but a good show, especially in front of 5000 in such an icnonic venue as the Albert Hall, the audience love him and will be completely up for a great night, he'll do all the old favourites and hits and have everyone on their feet at the end for Give A Little Bit. One thing I like about him is that (unlike another certain frontman we all know) he's very relaxed and at ease talking to the audience and expresses his thoughts and feelings about his songs very easily, so not so many, slightly awkward sliences, between the classics!

I notice on Youtube, that most Supertramp videos are labelled as "Roger Hodgson-Voice of Supertramp".

I notice on Youtube, that most Supertramp videos are labelled as "Roger Hodgson-Voice of Supertramp". Essentially he was. If you ask most people to name a Supertramp song the chances are it will be one of his, as he wrote all the hits. When Hodgson quit Supertramp Rick Davies agreed not to perform any of Hodgsons songs and the group would become a vehicle for Davies's songs. But that didn't last long and that was where the real trouble started between them and it continues to this day.

Bit late with this one but as I expected the show was great. Roger played for 2 1/2 hours (plus the interval) to a sold out Albert Hall and there was quite a mix of Supertramp and solo material including a couple of as yet unrecorded songs. As I said earlier he really knows how to talk to his audience in the most relaxed way and explains the origin of his songs which are mostly very personal in subject matter and feeling, with openness and insight. It was fascinating to learn that Breakfast in America and Logical Song were both written when he was still a very young man (just 19 years old) and years before they were eventually recorded by Supertramp in 1979. Its probably unfair to comapre him to Jeff Lynne as Roger has been touring now for 12 years (after a 20 year lay off) and is very comfortable and at ease in front of his audience- unlike Jeff who was still getting used to the live experience again and very clearly does not like talking to the audience at all and never did, which is a shame but thats just the way it is.
Lighting and sound were good but not spectacular apart from a glitterball effect that had the entire hall and audience bathed in a shower of flecks of light which had the mobile phone cameras busy. But this show is all about the music and with an excellent 4 piece band including the brilliant saxophinist and mulit instrumentalist Aarron Macdonald, who has been touring with Roger for 12 years now it really was a night for great memories and beautiful music. Jeremy Clarkson was in the audience and even got a namecheck from Roger (although I get the feeling Roger didnt actually know who he was!)
Like ELO, we'll never see Supertramp in their original line up again but having Roger there (like Jeff ) is effectively the same thing and he clearly loves his audience as much as we love him and he promised to be back next year and I'll be there. (JL, take note).
