What was your first reaction when you saw the 'Balance of Power' cover and notice the traditional logo was gone? I personally liked the new one. It looks like a modern art piece of a face where the E and O are eyes and the L is the nose.

It was back in 1986 in Munich in the record store WOM (world of music): I was over the moon that there was a new E.L.O. record because I didn`t see it coming. They played "Heaven Only Knows" in the store, so I did not take too much notice of the logo, I rather watched the photograph in the inner sleeve with the remaining three band members. As I had come back to my senses, I didn`t like the logo too much, I must say. It is a bit too minimalistic, maybe. I also did not really love the music on this album like I loved "OOTB" or "Time" before, but I keep returning to "Heaven Only Knows" and "Is It Alright" to this very day. The cover I like the most is the one of "Time". The SM-cover was a bit of a mess, really, but kind of funny. And one could argue if the spaceship on OOTB and Zoom and again on AITU wasn`t a bit over the top. But I will nevertheless buy a spaceship T-shirt in 2 weeks :-)

Always hated the cover from day one and nothing will change that, how can you go from Time and SM to this?

I always felt that the album cover sort of reflected Jeff's attitude to the album - pleeeease, let it be over!
Saying that, although the instruments used were of their time, and probably cutting edge technology in the mid 80's, the craftsmanship of the songs themselves are still of the same standard. It's still probably the album I listen to the least though

As a piece of art I like it. I like the strong, bright colours and the face in the design. Yet as an ELO record cover I don't like it at all. Far too 80s. It's like something Spandau or Level 42 might have. It promises saxophones and synths. For ELO it's unappealing.

I wouldn't say I love every track on BoP but there are still some properly good ones, mostly on Side 1. The cover struck me as typical of the time, loud primary colours and slashy shapes. Don't think I ever considered it to be a new logo to replace the tried and trusted one, just as a bit of a change.
I've liked pretty much all the album covers, I've stared at most of them for so long since I started collecting them they're sort of hard wired into my memories.

I remember buying it and thinking how they'd done the cover on the cheap compared to previous abums.

In its own right, as cover art, I like it. As an ELO cover, nah...

For me it started with the release of lead single Calling America on 7" and 12" vinyl. The picture sleeve was the same as BOP but I wasn't to know that at the time so was quite impressed by the 'contemporary art'. I should have know better as most of ELO's lead single sleeve designs at least hint at the forthcoming album's artwork. When the album came out bearing the same cover I wasn't so sure. It was very much of the time, bright colours and angular shapes. Today, it's so different to any other ELO cover that I think it looks pretty good in it's own way.

i remember just thinking how stark the cover looked and that they were maybe trying to be contemporary and abandon the image of the ELO of the past. The inner sleeve also now only had 3 members of the band, I didn't know Kelly had left til I saw this....it all seemed as though it was all shrinking away...which in reality it was.

I think the cover actually reflects the music. This was "modern" minimalist ELO, with a sax!
