Great gig. Same set list. JL on good form. Dropped a couple of prize bollocks which even he found funny. I've come to the conclusion that the start of Evil Woman is now an in band joke. JL waiting as long as possible before singing. The band were through the second chord before he bothered with 'you've made a fool of me'. Rockaria was brill. He even started singing the second verse whilst the lead solo was happening, but he looked like he was laughing about it. Mistakes are what makes music live. The band are the best musician I've seen live. And the light show is incredible. Opening to Tightrope and the lights in Shine a little love are amazing. He needs to drop Showdown and When the night comes. Both dont work for me. Crowd were up for it and the atmosphere was excellent. Wasnt quite as special as Hyde Park for me, but it was still amazing and I get to do it all again on Thursday The only issue in the whole gig was... i nipped to the loo before JL started and when I returned the vacant seat next to me was occupied by someone who took up a seat and a half. He was vast, smelled like a bag of horse dung and seemed to be oblivious it. Must have neen 30stone plus. I did think about asking him to give me half my ticket fee since he was using some of my seat. Lower tier. He was drinking diet coke though, so all is fine. ? I actually asked a steward if we could be moved, but he said I'd have to go to box office and ask. It was at the other end of the arena, and given it was 8.45, I didnt want to miss the start. Just thinking about the gig though, I get to do it all again on Thursday in the Toon. I was going to say, that's ELO part 2, but there's something not quite right about that !

Evil Women. That song ! They played it 3 times at the Kimmel Show to get it right. Maybe the Evil Women still has her hold on him?

It sounds like he's really getting back into live gigs. For a guy who used to say how much he hated playing live, this is rather surprising. But I'm not complaining! Can't wait to see him if he decides on some more US shows!

Randy Newman is playing keyboards on these shows? Wow, you'd think they'd advertise that!

Jackpunch you are the man ! Thanks again. Great to meet you and enjoy the rest of the gigs!! It was a brilliant gig. Tightrope was a super opening track. I think he might have wasted Livin' Thing by playing it too early in the set. The only ones that didn't do it for me were All Over The World (not a favourite track of mine), When The Night Comes, Aint It A Drag and Sweet Talkin' Woman. The latter will always be one of my favourite tracks but I don't think it was too hot. The chorus didn't have enough swing, missing the hi-hat triplets of Bev Bevan and Mik Kaminksi's more definitive style on the intro. And nothing from Time However, those are just minor niggles from a diehard to be taken with a pinch of salt. The band were impressive. Yes, they are clearly a backing band but Jeff appears very much at home and is able to concentrate on delivering terrific vocals which he absolutely did. There is obviously some pre-recorded backing being used (choir parts, special FX, possibly strings) but it really doesn't matter. The show is great. And seeing Jeff Lynne sing anything is a treat. The light show was excellent and totally made the concert. The sound was fine although the mix was a little inconsistent (sometimes the vocals were way out on top, other times the drums were hardly audible and Beethoven was messy) and there could've been more dynamics. The Feeling had a more dynamic and punchy sound, even though their sound was a little sharp in the 5k-7k area. Highlights for me : Secret Messages (Jeff obviously holds this in high regard - and quite rightly!), Can't Get It Out Of My Head (sounded beautiful), Tightrope (epic), Steppin Out (another great vocal) and the coda of Mr Blue Sky - a great, bombastic ending.

I agree re triggered samples, thats why the band cant wait for him in Evil Woman. Hope your Dad enjoyed it. We got back about 1.45am. Bit tired today !

I went to the gig last night and it was a fantastic evening. Haven't been to an arena gig for some time and having been to the intimate Porchester Hall gig last year and Hyde Park, I didn't think I would.
However, the whole package was truly great and exceptionally entertaining and it really works.
One thing I wanted to discuss is Jeffs voice. When he did Porchester, Radio 2 etc at the end of 2015, he clearly was under the weather and that explained why his singing voice was a way off what it was at Hyde Park and normally would be.
Now though, to me at least, it still seems a bit below par and he stops short of going for the normal higher notes a lot of the time. At times it 'felt' like he was struggling with it in a way that he never would have.
I did wonder at nearly 70 years of age what his voice would stand up to for a whole tour, especially as he hasn't done this for so very many years.
Maybe he's protecting it or something but to me it was some way short of his Bungalow Palace performances, Hyde Park et al. I was a bit surprised someone hadn't opened up this topic previously.
Didn't stop me enjoying the gig. It was brilliant.
And to top it off, I spotted myself three times in the programme live photos, all if which seemed to be taken from Porchester.

Ok, bungalow palace stuff wasn't live as such, there would have been many takes and edits.
Live though, he comes in late at the start of so many of the verses, but I quite like that. Its a bit quirky, almost saying these are my songs and I'll sing the way I want. Defo struggled a bit in telephone line and Shine a little love. But.... 95% was very very impressive. I suspect its one of the reasons why there's not a gig every night, he knows his vocal chords wont take the abuse.
