I was lucky to catch them playing in my home town of Castleford in 1985,can't remember too much about it other than standing next to Mik at the bar!(looking back,I ought to have offered to buy the pint...) I don't remember the song list other than Clog Dance and Showdown.

I unfortunately never got to see them live, a friend of mine saw them in Torquay and thought they were good.

This was the B-side of Clog Dance, written by Mik.

I love the "No Cause For Alarm" album. Been trying to find a reasonably priced copy of "Stop Cloning About" but the few online (Discogs etc.) are quite expensive especially shipping over here (USA). Just listened to that Mik Kaminski interview somebody posted here and Mik said that album was never officially released yet many people have it! I don't but would love to hear/have it. Just found one song from it on YouTube after a few years of checking. I don't even know if it's good!

For once, I'll confess to (probably) being more of an expert on Castleford than the offshoot Violinski, and I certainly had no idea anyone connected with ELO played so near to me until now! I do know that Mik studied in Leeds, where Lou also trained at the same music college, and ELO had previously done a few shows long before I was born, though I'm now surprised to learn that at least one member came even closer to my own hometown than Jeff did last year!

As with all of my messages, this one's coming to you from Knottingley. Actually, that's not entirely true, as I'll occasionally post while staying at a nearby relative's house - my partner is originally a "Cas lass," you see! For those who don't know, the skyline here is dominated by cooling towers, with three* power stations in the distance, making views from one side of my house especially reminiscent of the cover to a certain ELO album! Of course, there's little chance of Jeff or his colleagues being spotted looking out of any windows, but we do occasionally get crowds blocking the roads... or at least that was back when I still played in a local band with a tendency to stage impromptu street concerts!
*These are soon to become two, unfortunately.

Knottla lad eh? I used to walk to Knottingley swimming pool every week from Airedale back in the early 80s (and home again..) I was born in Cas but moved to Airedale soon after,I now live in Normanton. You're right about the towers, very iconic around these parts and I for one will miss them.We are virtual neighbours considering the world wide status of this forum! Back on topic,I saw the band at the Bradley Arms in Cas 1985 with my girlfriend, she must have enjoyed it because we celebrate 30 years married next year.I just wanted to know who was in the band, set list etc.

Airedale to Knottingley and back? That's quite a walk! Sadly, the pool you mentioned was recently closed, and it's also scheduled for demolition.
On topic again, it frustrates me how little we know about Violinski (along with Player and OrKestra, for that matter). Considering this band was active during the period I'm looking to cover in my upcoming book, I'd certainly appreciate if anyone can help fill in the many gaps...
One thing I have been able to find out concerning Violinski's catalogue is that several of their later singles in particular may not have reached stores on the dates listed as a result of the group not being high on Jet's priorities during its financial struggles.
Indeed, there's a good possibility that Mik is right in saying that Stop Cloning About wasn't technically released, since this was also the case for Silent Love, which exists as a 7" promo disc and almost virtually identical counterpart that unofficially made it to retail.

All I know about Violinski is that John Marcangelo and John Hodgson were with Mik in a band called Cow pre-ELO and that formed the basis for the new band. Silent Love was actually Simon Bates record of the week on Radio 1 in 1980 which should have guaranteed a big hit but the record wasn't in stores as Jet was already in financial trouble and the rest is history.
