Whoa, what an aggressive way to refer to a death, Timeblue ! A few things I'd like to point out about this: I think Maradona was a shitty person, and his death won't make me change my opinion about him as a person. But also, I think there's tons of shitty people out there, particularly in the world of artists and sports people, and very few are pointed out as Maradona always was. With others it's "what a great artist" or "what a great footballer"; with Maradona it's "what a horrible human being". As with many other artists and sports people (and in my opinion Maradona was both things), I'd rather keep his art, which IMO is the correct approach towards them. He was just one of millions of shitty people, and not much will change in the world because of that. However, as a footballer he was unique, and a lot in the world changed because of his football. John Lennon, to name just one example, was a dick too, and everyone remembers him because of his music. As for the cheating on England, let's not be hypocritical, 98% of sportsmen try to cheat, and it's the referee who has the responsiblity to stop them. Many English have criticized Maradona's hand from a supposed higher moral ground but I haven't seen them tell the referee of the 1966 WC final that Hurst goal's should be disallowed because the ball hadn't crossed the line, or Gary Lineker tell the referee that he dived against Cameroon in 1990 and that the penalty should be called off. And I haven't seen those people stand on that same moral ground to call them cheats. I'm not saying I'm OK with cheating, I'm saying that in sports it happens all the time and people don't judge Maradona with the same measuring stick as they judge others. Again, shitty person like so many others, but unique when he was doing stuff like this, which is what I keep from him:

He was a gifted player I grant you BUT... an awful human being by all accounts. The England game showed the world exactly how he was, brilliant footballer but a lying cheat too.

Wasn't Lineker a cheat too, Timeblue? Check minute 1:28: Not a big Lineker fan but that was a penalty! the goalie made contact and brought him down.

Talking about Lineker, here's what he said, with a nice anecdote in the middle:

My dad's a football fan but when he was informed of Maradona's death it took a little while for it to sink in -
"oh you mean the footballer I thought you meant the singer"

I hope you'll forgive me for slipping this into this thread - but, it is 'football' related. Like everything else this year, sport has been heavily affected by the pandemic. Events and games have started again, thank goodness. It's good for those who take part, and good for those of us who watch. On Saturday next, at 5pm, a BIG final takes place - four months after it should have. Not everyone here will be familiar with it. I'm probably tempting fate by even mentioning it My team, in green and red, hasn't won it since 1951. So close, so many times in recent years. A version of a song by a Wilbury is the perfect accompaniment to this video. What we've gone through this year is unbelievable. Maybe there's a green and red 'light' at the end of the tunnel...
