Rubber Soul is the favorite album from the Beatles for tk6 and me.
Dig this gem out, or buy it.
The US version of the album greatly influenced Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Wilson believed it was the first time in pop music that the focus had shifted from just making popular singles to making an actual album, without the usual filler tracks. He "answered" the album by releasing Pet Sounds in 1966.

"Girl". Is this a love song? Or an appreciation of a love turned bitter? Hisssssss............
"I'm Looking Through You". Is Sir Paul singing about himself? Being a Beatle changed him?

Bob Dylan's influence is all over this album, especially on the stunning "Norwegian Wood". Really great album. Probably in my top 5 Beatles albums, alongside "Revolver","Abbey Road", "White Album" and "Let It Be".

I love Rubber Soul and only bought myself a copy three months ago. It's a perfect album. Not one song you're unfamiliar with or any track out of place. Even though all the tracks are brilliant the album is so much greater than it's parts.
My other favourite Beatles LP is Abbey Road - you can't compared them, both are totally different.
I didn't know its anniversary was here! It's good to celebrate it. Good for it to be recognised.

Good reminder, BSJ! If I had to make a ranking of the Beatles' studio albums, Rubber Soul would rank approximately in the middle, which means that by non-Beatles standards it is an extraordinary album. "Nowhere man" is my favourite Lennon composition. "Drive my car" and "Run for your life" are two brilliant upbeat songs with very dissimilar luck in terms of success. I see Rubber Soul a bit as the Beatles' album of ballads: "In my life", "Michelle", "Norwegian wood" and "Girl" are all outstanding songs, as original as only the minds of those geniuses could write. Harrison shines with his great "If I needed someone". Heck, even Ringo takes his small share in the songwriting here with the Lennon-McCartney-Starkey written "What goes on". All in all a fantastic album, a real classic that could survive 10000 years and will be regarded as even greater as the decades go by.
