Really well written review (even if I disagree, haha). One thing I would like to point out is that the two songs off the album you liked are very similar. This struck me as interesting, I think our perception of the album depends greatly on what we want to hear from JL in 2015. For you, those more upbeat tracks clicked with you, but you found the rest boring. For me, songs like All My Life and the title track are perfection, everything I could have ever asked for from this album. To me, those songs do have climaxes, they're just not as immediately obvious as the more upbeat songs. I suppose it really depends on what kind of song you want, I don't think it's so cut and dry that some are better than others. Throughout, we have great chords and great production (although I agree, he could be a bit more adventurous on that front). I feel that some of the melodies are lacking (strangely enough, I personally think that DTTB is one of the biggest examples of this, which is why I find it interesting that it's one of your favourites), but I don't think that that detracts from the album too much. I'd even go as far as to say it's even more consistent the whole way through than albums like Time! Interesting how wildly opinions can differ, haha. (Although I don't see how you can think that "anyone" can write a song like The Sun Will Shine On You, that struck me as one of the more adventurous and interesting songs on the album!) lol he cant just say it and get away with it.....ive challanged him to write a song being 'anyone' like the rest of us....and put it on youtube....hopefully, like me, you will eagerly await the outcome...im guessing with a throw away remark like that it wont take long either.... Have a look here, this is just one of the songs Helmut83 has put together jefflynneselo.proboards.com/thread/194/electric-animal-orchestra-raining-farm

lol ANYONE can write a song like 'the sun will shine on you'.......? lol ok....go ahead...you said it....and you are anyone just like all us other anyones on here....im sure we all await your effort.....stick it on youtube....would love to see it... it would be dull....but....as helmut says 'anyone' can write a song like that ive challanged him to go ahead and write a song like that and stick it on youtube..... lol agreed totally.....i think its great....still listening all the way thru and not jumping over tracks..... we can now all sit back and await helmuts 'anyone can write that' effort to appear on youtube... lol lol he cant just say it and get away with it.....ive challanged him to write a song being 'anyone' like the rest of us....and put it on youtube....hopefully, like me, you will eagerly await the outcome...im guessing with a throw away remark like that it wont take long either.... Well, first of all, I wanted to apologize about my comment. It clearly disturbed you and you are visibly hurt by it. I thought it would be no problem to criticize Jeff Lynne's songs on this review section, but if I had known that doing it would disturb you so much I would have avoided it. Now, given that apparently you want to keep talking about it, here's my reply, which I sincerely hope you take in a better way: By saying "anyone can write a song like this" I meant in terms of quality, because of course there aren't two people who would write the exact same song (Sam Smith would beg to differ, but that's a different matter...). And yes, that's what I think. I think anyone who is able to play some chords on the guitar or piano can write a song as "The sun will shine on you" in terms of quality. Of course you can disagree, and in fact you do. Now, trying to prove points about who is right would send us into a byzantine discussion. Any song, mine or anyone else's, I could come up with to "prove my point" would be dismissed by you saying "this is garbage, it's nowhere close to TSWSOY", while I would probably say "this is better than TSWSOY, or at least equally bad". So why try to prove points in something which is a matter of opinions? And if it makes you feel better, I would never say the same about a big majority of Jeff Lynne's songs. In fact, I think many of them are works of genius of a privileged mind, and no one would ever have made something similar if Jeff Lynne hadn't created them. I don't think the same about "The sun will shine on you". I think you can hear stuff like that everywhere and that there's nothing special, wor-thy or interesting on it. About your challenge: like I said, there's no point in showing you any song, mine or other people's. I don't think you want to listen, you probably just want to get a song to get revenge on because of what I said. Besides, I said that because I would expect Jeff Lynne's music to be better than what any pedestrian aficionado musician could write. By the way, besides saying I'll try not to hurt you anymore, I'd also recommend you to take other people's opinions a bit more calmly. I love "Jungle" and it's been criticized to death on this forum, yet I never took offense on it, so I hope you can do the same and don't take opinions you disagree with so badly.

I'll freely admit there's no way I could write a song like that. If I tried to write anything musical it'd probably end up sounding like Baa Baa Black Sheep. Well, in my opinion, that would do. And I'm pretty sure if you tried you could easily do it. As I see it, it is a very low bar we are talking about with "The sun will shine on you". And I think the title track is sublime and try as I might I just do not hear Can't Get It Out Of My Head anywhere in that songs. Try singing the verse of CGIOOMH over the verse of "Alone in the Universe", you'll realize it fits perfectly. They are the same chords: C, Am, C, Am, then jumps to an F on the bridge... only then it goes different. Heck, it's even in the same key, and the tempo is almost the same!

BSJ here. Checkin' in.
I've been listening to Jeff's album everyday for almost a week.
The hell is going on here? Someone needs to kick our Lord Dame in the ass! The man is wildly talented, surrounded by the same, and this is what we get? Why is he holding back? There is so much more under that ‘fro. smiley-cool15

OK , here we go . My opinion thrown in to the mix. I started to listen to ELO when I was 12. Before that I far as I was concerned there was a musical void in my life waiting to be filled. I stumbled across Evil Woman and after that devoured everything I could get my hands on. I've said this elsewhere but my wife said to me me "How come you don't look at me like that?" when Jeff played Can't get it out of my head in Hyde Park . I'm not going to dissect the album track by track 'cos I think it stands together as a whole. I sort of mildly love it. Is it a classic? possibly not . Has it been worth waiting for? Yes. Do I like the sound of it? No. Would I love to remix it so it shines and shimmers? Too bloody right I would. I like every song on the album with the possible exception of I'm leaving you but I can't listen to it on my headphones. It feels like my brain is being squashed. And on every piece of audio equipment I own I have to turn the treble right up. I would love the touring band to be involved with the next recording. One thing I think Jeff can be excused for is ,in the thoughts of some reviewers, rehashing previous material. IMO it would be a miracle if he didn't and I quite like hearing nods to other familiar songs. I really don't get hung up on the whole "It sounds like..............." argument. To me it's astonishing that someone in their late 60's is able to produce a body of work like this. And seems to be revelling In the attention as well.
Fave track ? This week it's Alone in the Universe. Next week who knows? Love you all!!

if you want to send over the albums you have made thats cool of course, i would listen to them no problem and i promise not to just say they are rubbish and anyone could write it.... and if you could also point me in the direction of your sales history that would be great too.... if you have sold 50 million plus records then im happy to take my hat off to you, i dont have a problem with that....i wont eat my hat, they are inedible after all... its up to you if you want to do it... My sales history is zero. Does that mean I should refrain from disliking other people's work? Then, why are we discussing how good or bad Jeff Lynne's new album is if -according to you- the guiding criteria should be album sales? We have a clear ranking of who the best artists are and no one can discuss it: 1- Beatles. 2- Elvis Presley. 3- Michael Jackson. 4- Madonna. 5- Elton John. Somewhere down that ranking there's Jeff Lynne in a certain position and no one can discuss wether he is better or worse than other artists who are below or above him. And your curious criteria doesn't end up there: his position (and, subsequently, how good he is) also projects itself over his new albums, which means that those new albums and each of their songs will be as good as his previous sales history say he is, no matter if the new album hasn't yet contributed 1% to that sales history. Talking about which: how many of those 50 million copies correspond to "Alone in the Universe" (again, that's your own criteria, not mine)?

I was holding back posting my review until I really knew Jeff’s album, but after reading Helmut83 ’s and the comments posted about it, my many cups of coffee jolted in and I said screw it. After listening to Jeff’s new album for 5 days, my above post is my take on it so far. I’m disappointed, understand why, and know my expectations are not in keeping with Jeff’s time in life. I do feel he’s playing it safe not using his bag of tricks in more creative ways. There are songs and moments I do like. Well, it's one of those albums I hope to appreciate more as time goes on. It’s Mr Lynne, and who knows when the next will one will be.

I'm glad my post made you "come out of the closet", BSJ! I was surprised to see there were so few Jeff Lynne's fans who weren't that pleased with the new album, so far I had seen janne and I think no one else. Again, I don't think it's terrible, but it's Jeff Lynne were are talking about so I was expecting him to do considerably better. I wonder if anyone else is hiding as well.
