how many units did zoom shift, I appreciate the difference in chart position but there were a whole lot more albums being sold in 2001 weekly... what is the difference between the last two albums? Well the album charts now include streaming sites and digital downloads, when compiling their data. In 2001, they didn't (mostly because neither of those things existed). As far as physical copies, "AITU" has sold over 20,000 units in the US. No idea how many "Zoom" sold, but it only reached number 94. Just as a comparison, Bryan Adams newest album "Get Up", debuted here at number 99. Don't get me wrong. It is a wonderful achievement. After all what other 65+ year old record producer and/or performer has had a huge hand in 2 top 10 albums in so many territories this year? I think the question is for the US which is still the biggest market, what percentage of the 20k sales were bought by the hardcore fans (and how many bought zoom might be a clue) and is that really enough to base a US tour on

There will be plenty of people who will go to see Jeff and not have bought AITU.

For Jeff to be #23 with next to zero promotion and little airplay on radio in the US is astonishing. It goes to show how much he is still loved by his loyal fans. I hope he does a few more TV shows, maybe Saturday Night Live. I will give a nod to Jeff's management as they have done much more than they did for Zoom. He has been on Kimmel, Fallon, Sirius XM town hall, CBS morning show and two promotional shows in NY and LA. Granted most of these took place AFTER the album came out. Hopefully it will help it not drop too much in next weeks charts

Also, yes management has done a better job this time around getting the word out. Maybe Jeff Lynne's ELO could headline a New Years Eve ! Something to keep them in the public eye between now and the tour.

All of this "chart" talk is lovely and all, but I'm happy simply because my favourite "band" from the 70s has put out an album in 2015 and it doesn't suck. Far from it!!

Far from it!! i agree as well.....its great Jeff has hit the charts and at least Columbia will have some relief there....im sure they have piled a whole lot in to this project, not just financially but some blood, sweat and tears too....so well done to them.... im also glad that Jeff isnt in to social media, cos he wont read all this stuff about how some elo fans dont appear to like the album, endlessly banging on about this chord or that chord or same as this, that and the other....quite what they expect is beyond my thinking....and some even moaning because its not elo of 40 years back....so...go suck on it i say....Jeff has moved on, everyone does....and thats good...and the album is great..... i wouldnt mind....but these moaners....they arent having any chart success themselves...! lol ..................unless they are keeping it quiet.................

A good question for those people, are they the same as 40 years ago? Are they doing the same things or working with the same people? Jeff isn't an object, he's a human being trying to figure this thing called life out just like the rest of us. Has he made mistakes? We all have. He is however a brilliant musician at the top of his game who to me has no peer.

Today versus 40 years ago? That's a difficult one but I agree with the above couple of posters on this issue. If you really want your brand of music to be a direct copy of what it was many decades ago then start taking an interest in Status Quo! I actually like them a lot but my expectations of what they do these days are tailored accordingly. Many of their fans (via forums like this) still themselves bemoan how it was different in the old days so maybe no-one's going to win this one.
On the subject of the Quo, I'd love Jeff to come up with an acoustic album like they did last year, a sort of extension of the piano and guitar interpretations that he and Richard did for the Bungalow Palace sessions.

I've been a fan since 1978, but I think I'd agree that there's nothing earth-shatteringly new about this album. For me that's not a bad thing, I like nearly all the tracks on it and I was pleasantly surprised to hear elements of lots of Jeff's previous work. I find the album reassuringly familiar but there's no reason why others shouldn't find it uninspiring, or be afraid to post just that for fear of being denounced. I've been there before with other bands and it wasn't nearly as much fun as hearing the whole range of opinions. In fact I take a quirky pleasure when someone totally slags off a song I like or vice versa - makes me feel special and different
