was driving up to Vermont for vacation this weekend and found a radio station that was doing an interview with Randy Bachman from BTO. The DJ asked him about name and he said they were just Bachman Turner and people expected a folk duo. So then they added Overdrive looking to send a power chord sort of message. Record company exec said "too long", so Randy thought of all the 3 letter bands like CSN and ELO and said "How about BTO?" Thought that was the end of the ELO discussion, but then he mentioned how all the "classic" rock acts are doing tours and might not be around much longer so he spent "tens of thousands" taking his kids and grandkids to see Queen, McCartney and ELO this year. Was he done mentioning ELO yet? No! Randy's next comment "Jeff Lynne, that's good music. And he's touring with Dhani Harrison and I had recently done an album of George Harrison covers, so I talked my way into seeing Jeff and Dhani and I handed him (presumably Dhani) a copy of the album. Great show."
always nice to hear Jeff getting some respect! Randy also talked about how he does a weekly radio show where he plays his favorite songs and tells a little story about the artist - because after so many years in the business you've met ... everybody

On Ultimate Classic Rock website there was an article on Sebastian Bach from Skid Row talking about how everyone plays to tapes. One of the comments was about the Who and ELO using tapes and how ELO got busted
SORRY FOLKS, the website was Blabbermouth. I visit those two sites for my rock news, although Blabbermouth tends to cover heavier bands more exclusively....

In a shop yesterday, came across a book with the somewhat unwieldy title of "All The Madmen - Barrett, Bowie, Drake, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, The Who, And A Journey To The Dark Side Of British Rock" by Clinton Heylin. Couldn't resist a quick look to see if any of our heroes got a mention. And lo, Jeff and Roy were both there (in pre-ELO days). This passage is talking about 1968.

I was delivering my postal round today in the glorious sunshine and on passing a customer polishing his car, recognized the tune playing loudly from his radio. It was 'Night in the city' of all tunes. ME: " nice bit of ELO you've got going there" CUSTOMER: " its got to be done "

God knows what most of it meant, but from what I could glean from it, it's a most interesting article.

Hmmm..... this one passed me by at the time and, ok, it was way before the comeback and maybe he needed the money but nevertheless!..

I almost forgot --one day last week during my afternoon commute, I heard an excerpt from Fire on High (the acoustic guitar part with the great drumrolls) as transition music between segments on our local NPR station. It's on (a fairly infrequent) rotation, because I've heard it a number of times on the way home when All Things Considered toggles with local news reporting.
