Yep. They should have used that track, instead of that weak Oasis cover. I love that Oasis song, and the cover version. But of course, AITU is better. I like the song too but John Lewis pull the same trick year after year - taking a famous song and choosing a minimalist cover version over the original. In recent Christmases we've have covers of 'Real Love', Frankie goes to Hollywood and The Smiths. They should use something with more bite. One day, you know, they WILL pick an ELO cover song to use - We'll have to be prepared. British forumheads - today on Radio 4 at 11.30am, there's a half-hour programme on the song Mr Blue Sky. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06pttqpHere's the programme description: ELO's brilliantly off-beam classic, Mr Blue Sky, is explored in this week's Soul Music. It was released as a single in 1978, having first appeared on the ELO album 'Out of the Blue' in 1977. Written by Jeff Lynne, it was a No. 6 hit in the UK, and has endured on the radio airwaves ever since. Contributing to the programme: Tracey Collinson whose husband, Nigel, loved the track tells of the meaning it has for her. Musicologist, Allan Moore, discusses the anomolous use of the word 'blue': usually associated with downbeat emotions, this is a peculiar subversion of that cultural norm with the word 'blue' conjuring happiness and good weather. Tremayne Crossley and his friend, Jo Milne, tell the extraordinary story of how Jo heard music for the first time. This track played an important role in that event. For Dr. Sam Illingworth, Mr Blue Sky will always take him back to the low-flying research-flights he made over the wetlands, greenlands and seas of the Arctic Circle with the shadow of the BAE146 plane beneath him and clear blue skies above. The children of King's St. Albans in Worcester sang the track that features at the end of the programme. There is a link on the Radio 4 Soul Music webpage to the video that accompanies their recording. Ah, I meant to hear this and forgot!
Never mind, you can also download the podcast here www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b008mj7p/episodes/downloads .

British forumheads - tonight BBC4's repeating Jeff Lynne's ELO in Concert at 11pm. It's the concert from the BBC Radio Theatre if you haven't seen it yet. And then straight after that, at midnight, BBC4's repeating the Mr Blue Sky documentary.

Speaking of Mr Blue Sky, I spent some time on Christmas Eve listening to Concerto for a Rainy Day. What an awesome collection of music.

Speaking of Mr Blue Sky, I spent some time on Christmas Eve listening to Concerto for a Rainy Day. What an awesome collection of music. Yeah, specially "Summer and Lightning". That's the best song Jeff Lynne has ever written in my opinion. "Mr. Blue Sky", on the other hand...

Christmas has been very reasonable this year for ELO-watching.
On Christmas Eve the BBC showed a doc called Peter Kay: 20 Years of Funny www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06szzfy which included 'MBS' over the opening montage. Full marks to Kay/the BBC for playing the FULL song - "Please Turn Me Over" included. Nothing could be more wonderful than watching Kay and hearing Jeff *at the same time*.
Also did anyone see the new Orbison doc? www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06t3vb9 Jeff appeared a few times briefly but the doc didn't seem to go very deep into the Wilbury days as some of the other OrbiDocs have.

Heard 'Don't Bring Me Down' on the radio today at work.
It was a joyous occasion to hear everyone singing along under their breaths to the song as they worked. Even down to the "Bruces".

"When I Was A Boy" was playing on a background radio during Coronation Street last night, while two of the characters were having a heart-to-heart talk about their current situation.

Tonight at 8pm, on the BBC2 quiz show Mastermind, one contestant's specialist subject is ELO.
If you like, after the show, I'll add the questions the contestant was asked, so we can see how many we would have got right.

Good idea, dillwyn- get someone to read the questions out to you! {About the answers...} I'll add the questions, then put the answers in a spoiler so they won't show up right away.
