I met our new front desk person at work. Her name is Shardenay (sounds like the wine), but I couldn't help thinking Shard End, eh? she seems quite nice, and I'm quite certain that she wouldn't get the (very tenuous) connection that I made to Jeff Did you talk about where you might be going on holiday next year? LA, New York, Amsterdam, Monte Carlo? Shardenay and? I won't bother with my coat.....

Jeff got a mention on the Graham Norton show. Lenny Henry was one of the guests and was talking about when he was working in LA. He didn't like it there but said he had a support group of English expats which included John Cleese, George Harrison and Jeff. He actually said "Jeff Lynne from ELO". Maybe he thought that Graham or his audience wouldn't know who Jeff Lynne was.

I was listening to an old episode of "All The Way From Memphis" (a pop music quiz on BBC Radio 4 from around 2005/6) and a couple of things caught my attention. The Odd One Out round featured "Hold On Tight" (ELO), "Denis" (Blondie) "Lady Marmalade" (Labelle) "Ca Plane Pour Moi" (Plastic Betrand). (*If you haven't worked it out, I'll tell you at the end).
What really got my back-up was the fact that one of the the teams was made up of Andrew Collins (a know-all, music journalist who used to write for NME and also edited Q Magazine among many other things) and Tony Wilson, who founded Factory Records in Manchester and discovered and signed Joy Division/New Order and The Happy Mondays etc. Wilson (often considered a bit of a twat, to say the least and a typical music snob) said he would be too embarrassed to even admit having even heard of ELO let alone being a fan! But worse, Collins, claiming to be an "ELO fan" (prompting Wilson's disparaging remarks) didn't recognise Hold On Tight(!) thinking it sounded like Don't Bring Me Down (which, apart from anything else, it doesn't!)
*Anyway, the answer (which they didn't get) was Ca Plane Pour Moi, as that was sung completely in French and all the others featured had partial lyrics in French. See, easy!!

Builders making a front porch for a house up the road have their radio on constantly. Walking past I heard 'Turn to Stone' which was apt as they were mixing cement for the bricks they were laying.

On Popmaster this morning, DJ Spoony, sitting in for Ken, asked one contestant "In which year were Hotel California by the Eagles, Good Morning Judge by 10CC and Telephone Line by the Electric Light Orchestra in the charts?" The contestant thought it was 1979. Clearly couldn't hear me shouting "1977!" at the radio. They didn't win today's competition. Sometimes justice is done.

Extremely sinister that someone like DJ Spoony is sitting in for Ken. I have a horrible feeling that Ken will soon be following Simon Mayo and Steve Wright in being pushed out of his iconic slot so that Radio 2 can chase "the young listeners". So glad I discovered Radio Wales in time to jump ship myself - Radio 2 is pretty much unlistenable these days apart from Ken and Liza Tarbuck *totters off, grumbling like the type of old codger Radio 2 want rid of*

Ez there, uno. It’s pretty typical for the most senior staff to get first dibs on vacation time - especially around the holidays.
On the other hand, my local station just pushed out their oldest DJ to chase younger listeners.
I hope it’s the 1st one rather than the 2nd.

Ken is one of last of the old guard and he must be thinking what we are. Why not put Gary Davies in for him? He's an ex R1 dj but knows his audience well. Apart from Johnny Walker, there are few shows on 2 that I listen to anymore... Edit, just seen that Gary Davies is sitting in for Zoe Ball....

They have a habit of letting DJs sit in on slots they end up taking over, sort of softening people up for what's to come. I am very suspicious of the Spoony....

It's been a bit since I've been around here, so I'm not sure if anyone remembered that my rainbow lorikeet, Disco, loves ELO? But I just found out from another parrot keeper that her yellow crowned Amazon parrot loves them, too! She said her bird is especially fond of "Turn to Stone," and likes to sing along to it. I wonder if Jeff knows that he has Avian fans, too?

I drove through your area not too long ago to see the Orchestra up in Easton. Good way to get your ELO fix while Jeff’s band is silent.

Yes Disco is quite talented, certainly a better dancer than I am! Oh nice! Yes, Easton wasn't super far from my old place. We moved to Delaware in 2020, so it's a bit further now. But somehow, the drive to Philly is shorter from here and has less traffic, so that's a plus for seeing concerts.
