The New York Dolls didn't get air play on top 40 radio. My earliest memory of David is his over the top lounge singer alterego, Buster Poindexter, singing Hot, Hot, Hot. I think it was on SNL. Personality Crisis is probably the best known Dolls song.

Personality Crisis - One Night Only is a Scorsese documentary about David. I don't have access to stream it, but this interview gives a pretty good overview.

May David Johansen rest in peace. I remember Disneyland played "Hot Hot Hot" by Buster Poindexter during their "35 Years of Magic" daytime parade Party Gras from January-November 1990.

I know of The New York Dolls but don't know too much by them, regarded as the first punk band although they didn't get too much airplay in the UK.

Most of the visually and musically interesting artists I've heard of will list the New York Dolls as a big influence. Very sad to find out David Johansen has passed on. He leaves quite the legacy.
RIP David
