The night of his murder I was working at a Walgreens Drug Store. I arrived home at about the moment he was murdered and I noticed how windy and warm it was outside (which is not normal weather in Wisconsin in December) - I thought that was really odd. I went inside talked to my parents (they were watching Monday Night Football) and went to sleep. Not too long after, they woke me up to tell me that it was announced by Howard Cosell that Lennon had been murdered.

That MNF clip gives me chills. There's a longer version where you can hear Howard Cosell and his Monday Night Football co-host Frank Gifford debating about whether or not to announce Lennon's murder on the air, before ultimately deciding that the story was too big not to announce.
Lennon was no saint (who is?), but IMO, while Paul may have been the de facto leader of the The Beatles, John was the heart and soul of the band. A lot of his solo music is hit or miss with me, but there are about a dozen or so real masterpieces that emerged from his solo career.
