Wonder where the all that neon is now? God, what a boring song. The exploding cello saved it!

Wonder where the all that neon is now? God, what a boring song. The exploding cello saved it! Even then, the cameraman nearly missed it choosing to concentrate on some two bit drummer....

God, what a boring song. The exploding cello saved it! That explosion was more like a fizzle. I like the song, though.

Wonder where the all that neon is now? God, what a boring song. The exploding cello saved it! Grieg is pissed with you. But the song choice is indeed odd. I mean, this was in 1975 when they had built a much wider repertoire. The clip is also interesting because it must have been among the last things Mike Edwards did with ELO, if not even the very last. If someone has the exact timeline, I would appreciate it. He left the same month.

That was the beginning of the transition from Prog Rock to a Rock and Roll Band, which in 1979 became a Disco Very Band and on and on....

He left the same month. That performance might have first aired in early 1975, but it was filmed on 11/26/1974, and if my understanding is correct, Mike's last show with ELO was the final date of the Eldorado Tour's US leg on December 17th.

God, what a boring song. The exploding cello saved it! That explosion was more like a fizzle. I like the song, though. From what I can tell, the exploding cello routine revolved around a prop built from spare parts held together with a magnetic charge that could be turned off with a foot switch, which probably also triggered the pyrotechnic effect. For this to be something they could reasonably afford to do each night on a tour, it had to be easy enough for them to reassemble, though half the performance relies on Mike's skills in selling it to the audience. In that footage, you can just about see one of the road crew standing behind a wall of amplifiers, presumably waiting to hand him back his actual cello before the next song.

We'll have none of this nonsense, it's 26/11/1974 and well you know it....

Whoa! I remember back in the day I searched through the whole internet trying to find a video of Mike Edwards' exploding cello and I couldn't. I had grown to think it was all a myth. About 10 years later I finally get to see it -well, the little of it that the camera director managed to get-. Thank you tremblinwilbury . If I remember correctly there was also supposed to be a grapefruit involved in some fashion, although I can't remember how exactly, and clearly it's not on this video.

Playing the cello with a grapefruit was a separate bit. I can't find any pics via Google...

I've seen a pic of the grapefruit in question, but not for a few years now. There IS one out there somewhere...
