Just been watching this vid again and I noticed a fire extinguisher on Bev's drumkit. Did they possibly do Mr Blue Sky that wasn't shown on the show and if so,does it languish in the vaults somewhere?

Who knows, maybe a joke on Bev's part? It's funny that So Serious was performed "live" on 5 different TV shows (Solid Gold, American Bandstand, that Disney thing, Wogan, and the Montreux Festival), but each time it was a lip-synced performance to tape, and to this day, never actually performed live on stage by any version of the group! Uncanny!

But why would he have it there just for a 'one off' tv show?I guess that this falls into the 'hits that were never sung live' such as Diary... ,I'm Alive, Don't Walk Away, etc.

Uncanny! I know that Jeff was sick of ELO by then, but it is pathetic that they lip synced five times. ELO was once a highly regarded live act, and lipping is just really lazy - ELO should have played at least a final gig in a major facility and go out on a high note.

Wogan was a massive show at the time and I remember feeling excited that ELO might actually get interviewed. What actually happened was a let down, Wogan was away so we had a stand in presenter and then ELO lip syncing to So Serious, I was disappointed.

Bev does actually 'play' that fire extinguisher at 1:05 and again at 2:33! But why would he have it there just for a 'one off' tv show?I guess that this falls into the 'hits that were never sung live' such as Diary... ,I'm Alive, Don't Walk Away, etc. Fortunately, ELO Part II/The Orchestra has done most of those live over the years. For example, Ticket To The Moon and Horace Wimp have been regulars on their set for quite some time now. Eric Troyer does some great vocoder scatting on 'Horace', by the way!

I saw that but why go to the trouble of setting up a drum kit with the extinguisher to play a song that doesn't need it? I think they must have played more after the cameras stopped rolling...

At the time I really enjoyed this appearance on Wogan, we hadn’t seen ELO on TV for a long time so even if they were miming I had no problem with it, but really wanted Kenneth to have a chat with Jeff and Bev. Good spot with the fire extinguisher I like to think it was a bit of a laugh on Bev’s part with a touch of nostalgia thrown in.
No sign of it in the video….

Isn't there a sound effect in the intro to Rock and Roll is King that is like a fire extinguisher being tapped? Perhaps they "played" that too but it wasn't broadcasted? I know it used to be a really popular song with the general public.

OK maybe just a bit). Weren't you around in the 80s? Everyone lip synced, in fact many shows refused to allow live performance or even singing to a backing track.

I was in law school when BOP was released, and in London the summer of 1986, so I am quite aware of what the musical trends were. But still, Jeff Lynne doing Milli Vanilli 3 years before them? ELO lipped at the beginning of their career - that was to get them noticed. But at the end? ELO playing Disney? Once again, pathetic. They were better than lipping, that is my point. Jeff should have went out on a high note rather than lipping and opening for Rod Stewart. Maybe Don Arden was right - he did have a role in pushing ELO to the top.

Your point relies on an assumption that whoever was making the decisions for the band at the time had better offers on the table. That might not stand up to cross examination.

The buck stopped with Jeff Lynne. As everyone likes to say: Jeff Lynne = ELO. Arden was out of the picture and had his own legal problems (along with his son David).
Bev had to convince Jeff to do Heartbeat 86 - I don't think Bev had the influence he once had in the ELO orbit. He left ELO to play with Sabbath, after all.
As for whether there were or were not better offers on the table, at the end of the day Jeff could have made it happen if he wanted it to.
