A fantastic version! Great post. And dare I say, different but equal to the original version.

How about a song that's the namesake of this thread by Earth, Wind & Fire whose horn section The Phenix Horns does sideman work for Phil Collins and Genesis!

They had that other world / outer space thing going too. I'd say that ELO and EWF were the two biggest progenitors of that "theme" at the time.

I think "In the Rain" by The Dramatics (#5 AT40 1972) influenced Jeff Lynne when writing Concerto for a Rainy Day and "The Whale" among other things!

I love EWF and P-Funk! I grew up listening to both of these bands, introduced to me by my older brother, who also introduced me to ELO at the age of 11. I 'm currently listening to EWF's Greatest Hits CD each day on my commute. Sing a Song is one of my favorite songs ever. Getaway is my Spring Break inspiration song. Shining Star is my daily dose of upbeat encouragement before a long day at work. So many great songs... too many to mention! P-Funk is good, unbridled Afrofuturistic fun! At 81, George Clinton hasn't completely retired, as alluded to in the article. He's from NC and headlined at a free outdoor music festival in Greensboro just last fall. A family emergency and concerns about crowding/Covid kept me from going. Based on the clips I saw online, he did not disappoint, even though it was raining and they were performing under a big tent instead of out in the open. Good tunes for sure! And both of these bands are hugely important to African American culture in the 1970s and early 1980s.

OMG! I just found this amazing concert on Youtube - Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire, performing together and separately! Sit back and enjoy over 2 hours of musical bliss, especially if you like upbeat, danceable tunes; flawless musicianship; stunning vocal solos; beautiful harmonies; uplifting lyrics; and horns! This is an unbeatable combination! I wondered why the brilliant EWF founder and mastermind Maurice White was not performing in this 2004 concert. A little research reminded me that he stopped touring in the mid 1990s due to Parkinson's Disease, which eventually caused his death in 2016.
