Just been reading about the discovery of some of the wreckage of the space shuttle 'Challenger'. Some divers were looking for sunken WW2 bombers when they found a huge piece of the shuttle. It was indeed a sad day in 1986, I remember watching it and wondering why the commentary had ceased for a few seconds and then realising what had happened....

I remember it well, too. I was studying in Paris at the time. My "host mother" tapped on the door of the bedroom that I shared with another American student in her home, and told us the news. We went into the living room and watched the TV coverage together. So sad! That day and the Chernobyl disaster a few months later were two very sobering events that I recall from that year, along with some very heightened terrorism warnings when there were heavily armed, grim-faced CRS agents everywhere.
