So the new version coming out is hopefully without the backing tracks? I don't know, but I assume yes. Once the mistake has been spotted, I assume not more editions with the backing track came out.

I'm not a convert to Blu-ray yet, but it's good to see all these videos brought together like this.
For those outside Europe, there doesn't seem to be an alternative to the Region 2 version. It would be good for them if there was, because only the Region 2 versions of the DVD releases include Daytripper and Roll Over Beethoven from Szene/Rockpalast, and Roll Over Beethoven from Fusion. No idea why that was.

Considering this new edition is an upgrade to the more recent Wembley DVD, I'm guessing the soundtrack will be the fully restored version where the live musicians are heard rather than the mostly backing tape heavy mix of the original Jet release (which was actually issued on CD in mono due to its audio being lifted directly from the same broadcast master as the VHS)! On the other hand, it does also include the Discovery videos, though I doubt they'd revert back to inferior sources for the main feature just to be able to put these on as well.
Regarding the long rumoured Time era live recordings, let's just say that both an album and concert video might still be out there in the most unlikely place you'd probably ever think to look... I really can't say any more than that for now, as I don't want to ruin any negotiations that may still be happening behind the scenes to ensure this material finds it way into the ELO archives where it belongs! On the other hand, what I should be able to reveal is that rather than being a compilation of the band's multiple nights at Wembley or even highlights from the later European leg in '82, the shows captured are from the earlier US portion of this tour and were part of a major deal that fell through. Really, I'm limited in what I can disclose on this subject as I stumbled upon this information almost by accident while speaking to someone about research for something else.

At the time of that DVD being put together, the copyright for Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven had lapsed into public domain, or at least that was the case here in Europe. As for over in America, I believe an extension release was issued that allowed him a further 20 years before this happened, which is why the NTSC edition had this song removed from both the Szene and Fusion performances. Now, the story behind Day Tripper is a bit more complex, as I believe the deal with cover songs is that a percentage of sales goes straight to the original artists, or the license holder in this case. Apple have been known to be a lot more open than others when it comes to this, particularly as other musicians playing tracks from The Beatles has brought in a significant amount of revenue. Thankfully, in the example of ELO where there are so few covers in their back catalogue, virtually all of the profits go directly to Jeff Lynne, though if you look in the credits for any release featuring Roll Over Beethoven, you'll often find some acknowledgement of this being an exception. Although both are now very much public domain, I'm curious to know the legal state of Jeff's arrangement for In The Hall Of The Mountain King, as this is clearly based on the composition by Edvard Grieg. Also, what about Jeff's treatmnt of Grieg's Piano Concerto In A Minor? Additionally, I'm confused as to why Orange Blossom Special and Great Balls Of Fire were able to be released on the same video compilation with no problem... In a nutshell, music licensing is a massive headache for all involved!

There seems to be an awful lot of extras on here. The Discovery film was previously available with the Wembley gig on DVD before I believe and the Brunel/Rockpalast/Fusion concerts had a dvd to itself. But it's nice I suppose for them to be available all on one disc. I just wish the disc was sold as an 'ELO Collection' rather than as Wembley plus extras.

To make confusion even bigger, it appears that for the OOTB tour the band used a backing track in the return (this is, only them could hear it, not the crowd) probably taken from the album version editions, so as to keep the band well cordinated in an environment like the spaceship which wasn't really suitable for playing because it was full of echoes and noises. When the first edition of the Wembley concert video came out, the engineers and producers mixed those backing tracks along with the live material, thus generating those extra instruments and voices janne talks about. That's why many accused ELO of doing playback in those concerts, but apparently what the public in the stadium received was only the musicians' playing/singing, without the backing track. Then someone warned the producers about the mistake and they made a whole new edition without the backing tracks, as the public received it and as it should have been in the beginning, but at that point the edition with the backing track had been widely sold. I can't even remember where I read this (somewhere in YouTube I think) but apparently that's how the story went. Yes, someone timed the performances in two different cities and the length of the concert was identical, because they were using tracks from the album in their monitors. LOL

I'm hoping the lack of On The Run from the Discovery set is just a listing error, as this is pretty much as definitive a collection of ELO videos as we can expect for now unless someone compiles all of the original promo clips as well (preferably including those currently available exclusively to YouTube, such as the '80s period ones). As for the Wembley concert only being in standard definition, a higher quality version would only ever be upscaled considering Mike Mansfield always shot on video rather than film. If there's any hope for future home video titles, I'd like to see a complete "Greatest Video Hits" type package and at least edited highlights from the Heart Beat '86 charity show, as I suspect arranging the licenses for all of the various featured artists may be why this is stuck in limbo, similar to the equally-demanded Concerts For The People of Kampuchea series that I'd love to see get an official release. Also, if the rumours of a professionally filmed show during the Time Tour are true then of course I want to see that - I was actually told something very promising about such a thing once, but I don't know if I'm at liberty to speak on the subject as this information was given to me in confidence while I was doing research on another topic... OOOH go on Shardender. We won't tell anyone, Promise For me personally,a 'TIME' video would be the dogs testicles,so I'm hoping for this to be true (although I'm not confident it will be....)
