Am I the only one who thinks that the order of release of the hits from the film is a little weird? Surely Xanadu should have been the lead track followed by All Over The World next. Magic seems a little tame to be the opening release (although it was massive in the states) and didn't fare too well here in the UK.

I remember buying I’m alive first then all over the world followed by don’t walk away. Strangely enough I never bought Xanadu.

That's nice, I've never seen that before... Had forgot all about it until your post. Bev Bevan must be a really decent bloke, seems to always have time for the fans.

"Magic" is a great song, so good in fact that it's good enough to be an ELO track! It isn't, but if JL had written it I'd have believed it. Don't fear the ONJ side of Xanadu... well maybe that track with the Tubes, fear that one a little!

The Tubes song isn't that bad either, Fee Waybill is an amazing front man.

Any reason why songs such as Fool Country and Drum Dreams were not featured on the album?

My guess is that it was simply an issue of disc space, plus there are three non-album B-sides. I wouldn't be surprised if the various artists and record labels involved had an agreement in place to split everything equally, never mind that Drum Dreams in particular seems like a massive drop quality-wise compared to ELO's other contributions. In the context of the soundtrack LP, that especially would have been the obvious filler song, while the ONJ side got two extra decent efforts thanks to Fool Country and You Made Me Love You. Ideally, I'd love for Xanadu to be expanded to a 2CD set, featuring all of the early versions from the production reel (including the October '78 studio demo for All Over The World, recorded at Soundcastle Studios as Bill Bottrell's first project with ELO) and anything Jeff or even John Farrar can find in their archives. Of course, the real highlight would be all those additional bits heard in the film yet never released separately, such as the closing Xanadu Overture or some background synth parts that were reportedly left in from a preliminary score done by Jeff and Richard, though I'm yet to find any confirmation of whether that was actually the case.

Maybe an extended album should be issued with all songs featured in the movie on it.

They'd apparently been trying to negotiate an expanded reissue of Xanadu for roughly a decade, but dealing with so many artists and labels meant it was impossible for everyone to agree on what should be included, never mind how to split any profits made from such a release. Of course, it didn't help that Jet Records doesn't really exist now, though it would still need to either be consulted or bought out, and the only time Dave Arden seems interested in preserving the legacy of his late father's company is when he surfaces every once in a while to sell whatever he can find dotted around on eBay (at one point, he was attempting to offload several ELO master tapes and even video reels at massively inflated prices).
As of about a year ago, Olivia's team decided that everyone missing the 40th anniversary was the final straw, and so she's now looking to release a scaled down version as part of her own catalogue overhaul. I wouldn't expect much - if anything - from the ELO side of things, even though we know there is a wealth of potential material that could be featured, including that instrumental medley that surfaced a while back. The biggest story to be learned from Xanadu as a whole is that bringing so many people together for a project might work first time around, only it very quickly becomes a legal minefield if any one party wants to do anything with that later on down the line, which is also why so few of those all-star charity concerts ever end up being touched after the fact. For every Live Aid or Concert For George, you have things like the Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea that are doomed to eternally remain in limbo.
