Hi All, I see that Hall and Oates are pretty active on social media these days, and I was curious whether they ever had comments about serving as ELO's opening act during the Time Tour in the US. I've never heard Jeff or Bev speak about them, but I also wondered about H&O and what they said in the press. I know that they never played with ELO (let's saying during the encore) while they were on tour together. Thoughts? Sources?

eloneen is a big Hall and Oates fan and saw them open for ELO during the Time tour, if anyone knew any stories or comments from them about ELO I’m sure eloneen would have heard them.

I found a setlist from a Cincinnati,Ohio show. At the time, I'm guessing H&O were very popular given some of the songs in their setlist.

Interesting to note that 'I Can't Go For That' wasn't included in their set even though it had been released that month, any idea why?

Hall and Oates were absolutely and spectacularly popular at that time!! Voices had come out in 1980 and then Private Eyes in 1981. They were in the middle of a big string of hits from those two albums, including #1 songs here in the US. Timeblue "I Can't Go For That" was released as a single in November 1981, so it wasn't a hit yet when I saw them "open" for ELO on Oct 23, in Baton Rouge. I can't find the H &O setlist from that show, but it probably wasn't different from the other nights on the "Private Eyes" tour. As a big ELO and H &O fan, that concert made my dreams come true!

I don't know of any comments made about ELO, but I haven't read or heard everything, obviously. John Oates is a very laid back guy. Daryl Hall does most of the talking, and he is quite good at self-promotion, so he mostly talks about H & O, their current and past individual and group projects and successes, how they got together, their musical influences, etc, some of his views about the business of the music business/ record labels, etc. Occasionally, he will discuss some personal issues, like a fierce battle with Lyme disease about 15 years ago, and the tragic death (to leukemia) of his longtime (former) partner's (Sara Allen) sister, and songwriting collaborator, Jana Allen at a fairly young age back in the 1990s. His range of preferred topics isn't as prescribed/limited as JL's, but you know that there are certain things that DH will say in just about every interview and there are certain things that he will not discuss. DH and JL would be odd on stage together, I think. Daryl Hall would definitely steal the show. JL is too laid back in comparison. He and John Oates might enjoy jamming together on the guitars, perhaps. DH strikes me as being a bit of a prima donna onstage, especially when he was younger, but he has been quite gracious with other artists on Live from Daryl's House. But then again, they are chosen by him as his invited special guests to his house on his program...

I still think that they should have played ICGFT(NCD) everything they recorded back then would have been big, especially in the US. Didn't this song knock Livvy off her 10 week run at the top?

I have photos of ELO and H&O at the Milwaukee show. Will post them here sometime. H&O were hot from 1980 - 85/86 on a series of albums plus videos on MTV.

Yeah, and both kept Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" at #2 for a then record 10 (9+1) consecutive weeks which broke the infamous one by Gerry Rafferty! A music industry rumor claims that "Baker Street" did manage to overtake "Shadow Dancing" in one of the latter's seven weeks at the summit, with Casey Kasem recording his American Top 40 countdown placing it at the top. However, at a dinner with Gibb's managers, then-Billboard chart director Bill Wardlow was told if "Shadow Dancing" did not remain at #1, Gibb would be pulled from the lineup of an upcoming Billboard concert. Wardlow then called the magazine to leave the song at the top, and Kasem was told to re-record his countdown. Although this story is disputed, "Baker Street" did manage to spend two weeks at #1 on rival magazine Cashbox's singles chart, who had no such obligations to Gibb or his managers, causing some to think there may be truth to the account.

I never knew that story about Baker Street, I didn't even know that it held the record for most weeks at number 2 at the time. Great song though, my all time favourite...

Baker Street (the Raphael Ravenscroft saxophone riff hook, Hugh Burns guitar solo, also Gerry Rafferty's lyrics & vocals) is also among my all-time favorites, then its follow-up Right Down the Line and Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel from 1973!
