I think Jeff would make an excellent judge of talent - he's sharp, has a good ear for pop sounds, is supportive of other musicians and is generous with praise. He also has a gentle, humble, humorous way of talking which is great for drawing out nervous performers but also has a serious, non-nonsense attitude in the studio - ideal for getting the best possible work from his protégées.
What Jeff is not is a TV talent show judge. Jeff is no Sharon O.
How Jeff works is not how the TV talent show works - this is why the music from these shows bear no resemblance to real music i.e. music that sounds anything like Jeff's - inspired, intelligent and organic.
If there was a show or even a scheme, on or off TV, that genuinely wants to help new musicians I'm sure Jeff would be interested in supporting young talent. But I can't possibly imagine him sat on a panel, at prime time Saturday night, showing off his smugness and crushing one-liners. That's just not his style.
Yes he'd be a wonderful judge, a contestant's and a viewer's dream. Give Jeff a new pop group to mentor and he'd have more hits than Cowell. But in the context that's popular today his style is just not suited. TV talent shows and Jeff Lynne are miles apart.
