Shocking news, never knew he'd been battling cancer for so long. He must have influenced a lot of guitarists who are legends themselves now, he was a genuine star with so much talent. His almost permanent grin was one of his most endearing features too and will be missed almost as much as his playing. R.I.P. Eddie

I didn't know about his illness either. Like you say, his grin was almost ever present. RIP Eddie.

Van Halen is one of my all time favorite bands, I have all the studio albums. Actually became a fan when the LP "5150" was released (first one with Sammy Hagar on the mic) and then went back and got all the rest. Ed was so good, he set the bar for guitarists. (almost) Every 80s glam/pop metal band had an awesome lead guitar player and you can trace that back to the standard established by Ed on the first few VH albums. Guitar passages that should still leave your jaw on the floor became commonplace, even ho-hum because everybody had to try to keep up with Eddie. Beyond the instrumental prowess, the man was a great songwriter too, the total package. I thank him for the music and he will be sorely missed in the rock world.

Another very sad moment as we lose a true rock great.
I had the privilege of seeing them at Wembley Stadium in 1995 when they supported Bon Jovi and quite frankly, blew them off the stage - such a powerhouse. Seeing Jump performed live in a large stadium is just one of those moments you don't forget.
RIP to a monumental guitar player and seemingly, an all round decent person.
