Without question, my favourite musical is Jesus Christ Superstar.
I've only just found this on YouTube. It's moving seeing the stage of The Lyceum again
My passion for this show started with seeing Steve Balsamo sing Gethsemane during an awards ceremony on television. Up until then I hadn't given the show any thought whatsoever. Well, not exactly true. Early in 1996 I'd seen a magazine advertisement for the revival later that year. Reviving a 60's hippy show… was that a good idea?
Gethsemane changed my mind. I'd never heard the song before - and what a version - and singer - to hear it for the first time.
I saw it first in 97. My student card 'obliged' me to go and see it twice a month after that. Not a great hardship, I have to say
In those trips I sat in the 'Tribune' - three tiers of seats behind the stage - looking straight out at the auditorium. Talk about being close to the action! So close in fact to hear Judas and Simon arguing in character while the real action was down on the circular stage. Zubin Varla and Glenn Carter - truly great actors and singers.
Imagine… the lights have gone down, and the first sound you hear is the deep menacing growl of the guitar intro to the Overture. Hairs standing proud on the back of everyone's neck!
At the end of seeing JCS for the first time came the biggest surprise - the most beautiful instrumental to close any show.
There's a special place in my heart for The Lyceum.
I could go on and on…
The Lyceum production lives long on the memory of those of us who saw it. Again and again.
By the way, that band from "Birmingham, Aaahxford and London England" gets a mention by His Lordship at 7 minutes in the video above. That's a reasonable reason to post this here
My love for ELO makes JCS a perfect fit in my "Most Perfect Music Ever" list.
