What else is a musician going to do during a Pandemic? If you can't perform music, then talk about it.
Jeff famously writes the music first, beginning with the chords and only getting to lyrics at the very end of the process. Another of my favorite musicians is Todd Mohr from Big Head Todd and the Monsters. He put out a video today where he explains his approach to songwriting. Sounds pretty similar to Jeff's!
Use this thread for tips and techniques either your own or those of your musical heroes - ELO related or not.
Here's the clip from Todd to start it out.

I always write the music first and quite often don't bother with lyrics. I would say about 1/3 of my compositions are instrumental. If the lyrical theme doesn't suggest itself then i don't force the issue and leave it be. I really enjoy recording instrumentals anyway. My golden rule is that my melody has to be 'catchy', (to my ears anyway). If there's something about the composition that doesn't somehow 'feel' right then i quite happy to work the issue until i'm happy. I often start recording my tunes with just a skeleton of an idea and often i have some good ideas when i'm half way through recording, (my favourite part of the whole process). This can mean scrapping the entire thing or doing loads and loads of edits to shoehorn it in. Most of my ideas start life on the 'Music Memos' App, i think i have about 80 little snippets of ideas that i occasionally listen to and pick out what i consider the best candidates and then try and develop them into something. I find the entire process very therapeutic. When i'm about done i'll usually send tedblight an Email and say "tell me honestly.."...(Sorry Ted).

Each time eloandy sends me a track, I have to up my game. I’m gonna end up crazy like Brian Wilson if this carry’s on!!
