I wonder why Jeff doesn't do instrumentals anymore? apart from a brief Eldorado Overture on the last tour and a solo from Mik on the Time tour, the last time an instrumental was played was I think, Fire On High during the OOTB tour.

On the Bev Bevan interview Fluffy recently posted Bev said his new bank “Rain” was going to play Fire in High.

It's a pity to know that the string section can't have enough credit because of the keyboards playing exactly the same. I know it's about acoustic things, the place where they're playing, if it's small, big...but we can't hear the strings by themselves.
I've been watching the live versions of ElDorado Overture from this last tour and that TV version of 1974 (or '75) with Kelly and Mike Edwards still on cello, and it's incredible how Mik's violin sounded, even with Richard playing the same, but on the other hand, the version of the current tour doesn't give you the chance to hear the cellos or the violin. And of course I know the videos of the tour are from the audience, so the audio can change, but I'm talking about the video that Grroosss shared in another thread, which is that one with the better sound.

Maybe the instrumentals don't get played because instrumental songs, no matter how great they are (and I adore 'Daybreaker'), always have that slight prog air to them? I think they'd have a better chance of being played live during one of those symphonic concerts, you know, where they get the Royal Philharmonic or the Birmingham Symphony to play the tracks in a classical style. I've seen a Queen symphonic concert advertised but not an ELO one yet which is a shame as I'm sure someone must have done an ELO-based classical show by now.

Kind of like ELO's 2016 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl with a 30-piece orchestra?
Good point about the prog feel of instrumentals, though. I'd think I died and go to heaven if ELO were to open with "Fire on High."

But I'm thinking of a Hooked on Classics style concert without the disco beats. Just the music and no vocals or non-orchestral instruments. If the emphasis is on the music then the instrumentals are the best way to hear it. I always forget 'Fire on High' is an instrumental, that's how good a song it is!

Speaking of instrumentals that are on my concert wish list, I'd love to see Jeff dust off After All, preferably followed by Hello My Old Friend as was originally intended. On the other hand, I've no idea how he'd go about reproducing the "breakdown" section without resorting to some heavy tape use (or at least having elements run from a sampler's hard drive, since I can't imagine him literally going down the old school analogue route in this day and age). To make up for this, I'm happy to settle for The Diary Of Horace Wimp...

TDOHW is one of the very few hits that has never been played live, so that too for me would be special...

I'll brace myself for some negativity here, and throw in 'The Whale' as one of my instrumental choices.
