Ric was from the Baltimore area and The Cars were the first real concert I ever went to - Meriwether Post Pavilion in Maryland.
glad he got his HOF induction in time but very sad to lose another of the '70s rock legends

Sad news indeed,Best Friends Girl is a classic from '78. Didn't realise he was that old though... This one hit me hard! To me those Cars songs don't even sound dated yet... "You've got your nuclear boots
And your drip dry gloves"
That song is so perfect and eternally cool !!!

Sad news indeed I’d heard it on the radio on my drive to school followed by Shake it Up, in honor of him. What an iconic voice, a pity so many rock n rollers are gone. I don’t want to imagine a world one day with none of them left, at least their music stays with us forever.

I don't remember hearing that. Orr passed away at 53! At least he made it one year older than Roy Orbison.
Pancreatic cancer. Too much booze? Or just bad luck. Doesn't matter, that's way too young. : (

After ELO the Cars were my favourite band. When I started to take up the bass guitar and then attempted to write my own songs it was obvious that Ric’s work was my biggest influence (Jeff is just soooo musically gifted I could never emulate his style). Speaking so selfishly I will always be sad that I never had the opportunity to see the band in concert. I was.too young when they were in their prime and the tours didn’t come close enough to my part of Canada. I spent so many happy hours listening to the music of the Cars. All I can say is thanks, Ric and Ben. My condolences to the surviving members of the band and all the families and friends.

The Cars had a fantastic sound. Those greasy analog synths, dry guitars, unique vocals, and some really interesting songwriting. Maybe its just me, but I hear a lot of similarities between some of those Cars records and the songs on Time and Secret Messages.

Maybe its just me, but I hear a lot of similarities between some of those Cars records and the songs on Time and Secret Messages. I think i mentioned this before on the other ELO message board years ago, but I recall the Rolling Stone review of the Cars album Door to Door in 1987 where the writer said something like they were the American ELO, conveyor belt of hit singles... I knew that comparison to the eternally "uncool" ELO would be the kiss of death for the Cars! I guess the critics were getting sick of all the Cars success (4 sizable hit singles from the preceding Heartbeat City album, and a top ten new song from their Greatest Hits album) - kind of like ELO's incredible run of singles from Face the Music through the Hold on Tight release. The biggest difference, at least according to the US RIAA is that the Cars moved a lot more albums (especially The Cars, Candy-O, Heartbeat City, Greatest Hits) than ELO did.
