I was wondering if ELO were more appealing with a full orchestra on Eldorado and beyond or were the cellos just fine on their own?

The full orchestra for me I just feel that not many fans have acknowledged the prog-eras of ELO, because the idea of using cellos in mainstream rock & pop songs in the year 1971 was kinda left-field. and I'm a HUGE prog fan so it appeals to me : )

I love full orchestras - they can do special things to songs. However, sometimes, and I'm pointing no fingers at Jeff here, they can be simply there to look good or as a "token", doing nothing to really enhance the song.
I vote cellos only as I love the minimal early sound. It gave the band chance to be creative.

For me things really took off with Eldorado and the more sophisticated string arrangements.

I agree with everybody above so I still don't really have a view, I enjoy both.
I think you get closer to the recorded sound with an orchestra though, otherwise they're relying more on backing tapes like on the OOTB tour, which attracted criticism and accusations of total miming.

Have to go with full orchestra. The strings in the actual band is nice but it's not enough.

Now remember the beautiful trilogy of strings on "Showdown, Ma Ma Belle, daybreak" ect ect.....don't just vote for the clean polished sound of Eldorado onwards....remember there can be a biast opinion because through an awful lot of the post '74 stuff there are also layers of choral arraignments as well which add to the lushness of those productions. I also think that Louis had an affect on Jeff as well so pre '74 is "pure" Lynne only string arraignments (with help from OL MAGIC FINGERS himself)! So please take all this into consideration before your vote.

I must admit that I prefer post Eldorado ELO because of the orchestrations and even the live shows such as Wembley 1978 were overlayed with more cellos to give it a fuller sound.like I said,I prefer the orchestra to ensemble..ELE? nah.
