Just watched the two vids tonight and one thing hit me,in 'Calling America' only Jeff, Bev and Richard are featured but in 'So Serious' there is also Mik,Louis.Martin and Dave even though there are no strings on the song. So why were they not featured on the first song?

Makes good publicity? ELO People are attracted to the idea of a full orchestra, so by adding ex-members they're appealing to their core demographic!

If my memory serves me right So Serious was played on The Wogan show, who played on that version?

At the time they weren't ex members as such.I think it would have been better to have the full compliment on both songs.

Just seen the Montreux piece and although Mik is there on violin,Dave is on acoustic guitar and Louis is on keyboards. Also apparently this was sung live but the tv producers overdubbed them with the recorded version.

The "I guess we're really been out of touch" bit reminds me very much of the "But in the evening when the sun goes down" bit in Loser Gone Wild. Jeff seemed to be into simple (and conventional) four-chord hooks in the eighties. The inclusion of string players in that video is hilarious indeed.
There are not many ELO songs that I never could stand, but I have to admit here that So Serious is one of them. But there are some divine songs on the same album. Incidentally, does anyone agree that Heaven Only Knows must've been influenced by You Won't See Me by the Beatles? The verses...

The plot thickens, firstly the band plays 'SS' which we know hasn't got strings and here we have Dave and Louis on cello with Mik on violin, then they launch into 'CA' and Dave and Louis assume their rightful positions. Why didn't they just play both songs without the faux string section?
